The weather is usually lovely in September in San Francisco.

Average temperatures for SF in September is between 55 to 72 F.

However, the temperature will fluctuate from morning to night. Always bring a jacket of some sort.

Last night it was quite hot in the Central Valley, but by the time we got to San Francisco around 10pm to drop our friend off, it was quite cold.

When the wind blows in from the ocean, it can get really cold.

Been there when it was 95 in September and been there when it was 45 in September. Usually a good season. Good luck.

San Francisco is the most unpredictable weather of any place I have ever been! It can literally change as you turn a corner.

September should be nice, but always pack "layers". I had to buy an umbrella from the drug store on trip for a surprise torential downpour (but I forget what month that was, November maybe?).

September is usually the start of our "real" summer or summery weather. The fog system that is dominant during July and August tapers off. However, fog ranging from low clouds to drizzle is still a possibility - it just won't hang around for weeks on end the way it's doing now. Hot spells don't last long here - there is a three day limit (seriously) before the fog rolls back in. And hot means high eighties or at most the low nineties. This is all in the City proper that I'm referring to.
All in all, September and October give you the best chance of warm dry weather in S.F.

September is usually the best weather of the year, but as everyone said, all San Francisco weather in unpredictable. That said, the average high in September is 71. The record low for September is 48 degrees (that's the record low, not the record low maximum daily temp).

If you plan on going outside the city, be ready for everything - from hot summer to cold nights. Layers, layers
