San Francisco - Walking from Cliff House to Legion of Honor
Morning to all..... Any first hand knowledge on whether or not you can you walk alongside the ocean from the Cliff House to the Legion of Honor? Based on my map it appears to be about 2 or 2 1/2 miles.... I know it's just a short bus ride from one to the other, but I thought perhaps the walk would be more enjoyable.... Any thoughts? We are spending a day in Golden Gate Park and thought we might try the Legion of Honor on this same day as well.... Any help is appreciated..... Vacationmom

vacationmom,
Please don't attempt to find a way to "walk along the beach" between the Cliff House and the Legion of Honor. The coast in that area is not walkable.
Every year, some unsuspecting visitor gets trapped out on the rocks in the Land's End area near the Cliff House and has to be rescued. It's not called the Cliff House for nothing!
If you are sightseeing at the Cliff House, pick up the Number 18 bus as it goes up the hill. The route terminates right in front of the Legion of Honor.
If you are in downtown S.F., catch the Number 2 Clement St. bus going westbound. It will drop you off at the entrance to the golf course around the Legion.
If you are in Golden Gate Park, catch the Number 44 bus northbound as it goes through the park, then transfer to the Number 2 at Clement St.
My favorite part of the Legion is the procelain collection on the lower floor. I always regret that I can't buy any of it!
Have an enjoyable and safe trip. Welcome to S.F.

Mom, the area from Cliff House toward the Legion (or the bridge) is not safe!! It's a popular overnight place for the crowd you'd hate to see your children with! And you can't walk along the ocean all the way. Walking along the ocean in another direction is safe.
Check out MUNI bus 18 if it's still running from Cliff directly to museum.

Just my experience-when I lived in Presidio Heights until 2000-there was a pretty easy path above the ocean from the Cliff House to the Legion Of Honor that continued past part of the golf course and then into the Sea Cliff residential area-well after the Legion, a few holes of golf course and then residential-NONE of the land between the Cliff House and the Legion is Residential-it's part of the Golden National Rec area.-GGRNA. would you all be so kind to tell me when that changed?
vacationmom-I think I would call GGNRA about this this flks sound like heresay

rasnes,
I believe vacationmom's original interest was in walking along the beach between her two points of interest. Those who responded discouraged her because of the dangers of walking the actual coastline there. Is there a sign for the path you mention? I'd like to try it myself one of these days.

I grew up in that area and attended an all girls elementary school right there. From the Cliff House you have to walk up Geary or Clement--all residental (unless you count the VA hospital). Once you get to Clement, you can turn up and walk through Lincoln Golf Course which will take you to the Legion of Honor. None of it is along the Ocean and a bulk of it is in a residental neighborhood (Outer Richmond).

vacationmom:you aksed "can you walk alongside the ocean from the Cliff House to the Legion of Honor? " Yes you can and it is Delightful!!
This is probably one of the most spectacular areas of the Coastal Trail within the city of San Francisco. No, it is not on the beach, (for that info follow the 2nd link to Baker Beach.),but IME you won't care once you are there ! The views of the Marin headlands and the OTHER side of the GG bridge are not to be missed!
As many of you may be unfamiliar with hiking urban trails I will try to summarize a bit about the area. The area encompasses both GGNRA (Golden Gate National Rec. Area) and S.F. Parks and
Rec. Known as Lands End it also included Linclon Park-itself is 168 acres. Other facilities are the Lincoln Park Golf Course and Palace of the Legion of Honor.
Enter the cliff side paths of the Coast Trails from Merrie Way or what some consider the parking lot off Los Lobo Ave. The large lot ending El Camino Del Mar @ 32nd Ave. There is a plaquard map of the coast trail. This parking lot is above the ruins of the Sutro Baths and near the Cliff House. Length of trail to El Camino Del Mar reconnect a viewing platform adjacent to a golf hole is 1:13 miles. I have no idea why anyone would say it is dangerous in area or person, but hey I'll be glad to have the hubby and I met you there-it's quite the view! Have fun !
