San Francisco to San Diego

My husband and I both in our fifties flying into San Francisco from Scotland mid may, leaving from San Diego three weeks later. Would love advise to plan our trip. Not to bothered about going to LA.

Do a "search" on Fodors for suggestions. There have been about 5-6 people in the last month asking this same question.

As Stu suggests - many posts in here about driving the Coast - and I recommend taking a couple days at least driving - staying perhaps in Carmel/Monterrey or Big Sur - and also Cambria by Hearst Castle. Maybe doing some wine tasting there - or on hiway 46 toward Paso Robles - or in and around the Solvan/Santa Rita Hills area a bit further south, before you get to Santa Barbara.

Also plenty to do when you get down here to San Diego - and numerous posts about that. :)

BTW - love Scotland and the friendly Scots. Where are you from?

Oops - that's Solvang: see: http://www.solvangusa.com/explore-solvang/what-to-do/

It has a Danish theme - and yes it can be a bit touristy - but still a lot of fun things to do in the area. Try to watch the movie Sideways if you have not yet. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375063/

I agree to do a search here. Click above under California.

With three weeks you could start off in SF, swing east to Lake Tahoe, then down Hwy 395 to Tioga Pass(if open) to Yosemite. If you want to visit Yosemite, you need to make your in park reservations NOW. From there head back to the coast to Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Cambria, Santa Barbara and all points south.

We have had little snow so Tioga Pass may be open- but any (much needed) storms between now and then and the pass will probably be closed. But you can still do Lake Tahoe, and Yosemite by just heading west from Tahoe and then south along hwy 49 through the Gold Rush foothills to Yosemite.

A wonderful 3 week trip in May IMO would be SF to Tahoe to Yosemite to the Monterey/Carmel area, down the coast to the paso Robles wine area/Santa Barbara to San Diego.

Also IMO Solvang would just be a lunch stop, if that. Tom likes to send everyone there - at one time it was a Danish community, but that was generations ago. Now really - it is a faux Danish tourist village w/ fake windmills. You live not far from the real thing if 'quaint Danish' is on order ;)
