San Francisco to Monterey with possibility of Big Sur

My husband and I are driving from San Francisco to Monterey with plans to spend two nights in Monterey. He would like to drive to BIg Sur during the afternoon of our second day in Monterey. Can we drive to Big Sur in one afternoon and have time to return to Monterey for dinner or should we just spend the entire two days in Monterey? Also what route would you suggest we take from SF to Monterey? Thank you for any suggestions.

It can be done. Have dinner at the Ventana Inn if you are willing to drive back in the dark.

If you would like to visit a winery or two, on a separate day, drive the 11 miles into the Carmel Valley. Pretty drive and good food.

For the "typical" Big Sur experience, have an early dinner at Nepenthe. We've been going there since 1968. We'll be there next week, celebrating our 42nd anniversary.

>>Can we drive to Big Sur in one afternoon and have time to return to Monterey for dinner . . .<<

You do have time for a drive into Big Sur. But it would be much better to have dinner there instead of rushing back to Monterey. Big Sur isn't a 'quick look/see ' sort of place.

Thanks for the suggestions. Congrats to Stu on the anniversary. I am going to check into Nepenthe for an early dinner. I was concerned we would be pushing it to drive to Big Sur for the afternoon and short cutting Monterey.

Lots to see and do in Big Sur! You can take the Beach Trail (about one mile) down to the Beach to see where the Big Sur River meets the Sea. Hang out on the beach or go up to the Bluff Trail for a longer hike. Another great beach is Pfeiffer Beach with the famous purple sand and rock formations. It has 3 pretty coves. To experience the Redwoods you should hike the Valley View Trail (& Pfeiffer Falls) in Pfeiffer State Park. About a 1.5 hour round trip hike. If you have time, check out the Big Sur Roadhouse, a new restaurant that opened up in July. Fresh, locally sourced cuisine with coastal and New Orleans influence. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Amazing food! Nepenthe does have beautiful ocean views and are famous for their ambrosia burgers, south coast margaritas and French fries...They also have an amazing gift shop, The Phoenix shop. Two stories that you can get lost in...For beautiful art, check out the Hawthorne Gallery or Coast Gallery. So much to see and do... Have fun!
