San Francisco to Boston
 

I am thinking of taking I-80 to Salt Lake City and then heading north to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. From there taking I-90 to Rapid City (Mt. Rushmore), Iowa, Chicago, Albany and then Boston route.

Any tips/suggestions - things that I should remember, not miss, definitely do etc etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on if you have the time, there is Devil's Tower National Monument in northeast Wyoming. Deadwood City, SD, Custer State Park south of Rapid City and Badlands National Park east of Rapid City.

I would suggest at least three or four days for the Yellowstone - Grand Teton area.

You need to visit Wall Drug in S. Dakota, just to say you've been there.

A stop in Cody Wyoming would be fun for the Buffalo Bill stuff.

There's not much except sunflowers, wheat and corn from the Badlands to Chicago.

If you have the time, you should spend a day in Niagra Falls.

I am excited and looking forward to hitting some of the spots mentioned by the two of you.

I've done this trip (to Yellowstone) many times from SF area. Most direct route is to take US 93 north from Wells, NV to I-84 and then follow the Snake River up into Jackson Hole.

Another recommendation: Head east from Yellowstone on US 14 to Cody and stop and see the Buffalo Bill Center and continue on to Sheridan where you will hook up with I-90. This route is much more scenic than going up to I-90 from Gardiner, MT. However, if you have the time, the trip over the Bear Tooth Hwy is incredible if you leave from the northwest part of Yellowstone Park or do a little backtracking from Cody. Check it out on a good map.

Also, beware: if you are doing this the first couple weeks of August, the Rapid City area is jammed with bikers. Not the best time to see the monuments there. The impact of the rally extends for several hundred miles in every direction.

That 93 route looks good - didn't realize that was the shorter route. Unfortunately, we have to be in Salt Lake City. On top of it I really want to see the Grand Teton's too.

We are definitely going to see the Buffalo Bill center. Thanks for all your tips.
