San Francisco Theatre
I'll be in San Fran later this month and looking for theatre to see. We'll have two nights, Friday Oct.17 and Saturday Oct.18. We've done Beach Blanket Babylon, Are We There Yet, and The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron and enjoyed them all. Anything new?

Well it's a bit more Cirque du Soleil meets the Flying Karamazov Brothers than it is Ibsen, but we had the evening of a lifetime at Teatro Zinzanni. The show changes completely every 3 months or so, and I wouldn't hesitate to go again. In fact, all 4 of us agreed it was one of the most fabulous, fun evenings we ever had, so I highly recommend it. Check it out at http://zinzanni.org/

Jesus Christ Superstar is playing here right now.
The Bay Area has TONS of community theatres if you are looking for something a little offbeat. |
Berkeley Rep is a good place to check things out. Mary Zimmerman(who hs dazzled me with other works) will be directing The Diary of Leonardo Da Vinci..we have tix for Friday the 17th and I think there are still seats left on both evenings. You might also consider the Sunday matinee(2 pm). Curtain on Friday and Saturday is 8 pm..the cafe at Chez Panisse is a 10 minute(max) drive while the restaurant
Downtown is a 2 minute walk. Le Theatre is supposed to be wonderful but can be a rush prior to curtain. We're hoping to try it on the 17th. Given some of your other felt delights, I think Teatro Zinzanni is a good bet. (I think Joan Baez is still part of the production) |
Teatro Zinzanni seems kind of expensive. It would have to be awfully good to live up to those prices. I'm a fan of Joan Baez but hubby is unenthused. Maybe we'll try pot luck at the half price tickets booth on Union Square.

antlori, we thought it was expensive, too. But you do get a 5-course dinner as well as the show, which makes it comparable to other entertainment.
They do charge extra for cocktails and they aren't cheap. As our friend from Texas said, "Is there an ATM around here? I'd like to get another margarita." I can only tell you that by the end of the evening we felt we had gotten more than our money's worth, and I'd go back again in a heartbeat. |
I loved Teatro Zinzanni. I even loved it when I had to pay for myself and my two daughters, and I'm pretty cheap! :-) Yes, it's pricey but it's an entire evening. Joan B. isn't in it now. The lead changes every few months. Now it is Sandra Reaves-Phillips, an excellent jazz/blues singer.

Whew, Grasshopper thanks for posting. I was waiting for someone to accuse me of owning stock. When we saw it El Vez (the Latin Elvis) was in it. But everyone was just fantastic. They encourage you to "dress" so we went for it -- Frida Kahlo, Tina Modotti (moi), El Mariachi, and Doctor Demento, and the performers and staff really loved it.
