San Francisco Sushi Restaurant

I have not found a decent sushi restaurant in San Francisco...Looking for authentic sushi experience, no fusion Japanese food. Seattle, LA and Vancouver BC all have better Japanese restaurants.

There's a great sushi restuarant just off Chestnut on Scott; I don't recall the name but it's very close to the corner, just south of Chestnut. Fantastic sushi!

Try Berkeley. There are quite a few great ones.

BayArea Jul 17th, 2003 12:27 PM

Great sushi in Berkeley?? Huh?

I know Kirala, it's an old standby, I think the current best of the bunch.

Genki changed hands and is now putting out lower grade stuff.

What places were you thinking of Grasshopper?

When I was last there, a Japanese national recommended Sushi Chardonnay (which is across from the futon shop she owns), which was very reasonable and so good!

Topping hoping to get Grasshopper's attention.

:D

Hi BayArea,

I honestly don't know the names of the couple of places I found that I liked but a couple of years ago I had a client in Berkeley and we used to get sushi all the time. One place was about a block off University (south), where it runs into the campus. It was fantastic. When the client moved to Fremont we all got horribly depressed.

Since there is mention of out of The City places, then I can advise on
a place in Petaluma-the BEST sushi I have had anywhere in the Bay area-
HIRO on Petaluma Blvd. North. Absoulutely fantastic!

In San Fran, we have found that Kabuto is one of the better spots. I can't recall where it's located. If you are ever in the mood for a drive down the coast...Pink Godzilla in Capitola is by far one of the best sushi joints and very reasonably priced.

BayArea Jul 18th, 2003 02:59 PM

Kabuto's is the place whose name I couldn't remember. Looks like a hole in the wall, straight up simple nigiri, no rolls to speak of.

Location Geary @ around 15th Ave.

we tried Isobune in Japantown last week and thought the had pretty decent sushi. It is a floating boat restaurant and the sushi changes a little depending on the chef but they had better selection than the usual restaurants. sushi was $1.95 to $3.25 a plate.

Blowfish (in the Mission), Kitaro (Geary St around 22nd Ave), and the place on 9th Ave & Irving--I can't remember the name!

Ebisu on 9th and Irving. Rated # 1 by ZAGAT.

We Be Sushi on Parnassus at 5th Avenue.

Yes!! Ebisu! I don't know why I couldn't remember that!

If you don't mind taking a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, you might enjoy Sushi Ran on Caledonia Street. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

dovima Aug 4th, 2003 09:06 AM

Ebisu is great, but be prepared for a long line, esp. on weekends. Kabuto on Geary is also great, again, crowded, but there's a reason, obviously.
Ran in Sausalito is wonderful - nice to walk and look at the Bay lights afterwards.

jellybelly Sep 7th, 2003 04:10 PM

Ebisu all the way!!! it's at 1283 9th Ave. the long waits make the sushi taste especially good! :p

Another vote for Sushi Ran in Sausalito!!
