Hi Stu,
Regarding accomodation, can you recommend any suburb closer to downtown which can be accessed by train or even a quick uber. Accomodation in downtown seems very expensive.

I would find a spot IN San Francisco - not in a suburb. I live close to the Millbrae BART station & it costs $9.50 RT to get downtown. Plus any costs to get to the BART station. I do not know what Uber would be. Plus, there is very little to do in the suburb area if you don't have a car (except maybe Berkeley or Oakland). Plus what about pottie breaks, dinner, etc. It would not be the same experience to stay out of The City as it would to start and end your day in The City.

There are dozens of motels on Lombard Street in SF - which is close to Union St and Chestnut St which are two areas you might want to explore. Try there.

We stayed here, many years ago: Hotel Beresford

Also, we stayed at the Hotel Rex near Union Square, which has been re-branded the Hotel Emblem:

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to find a place in the downtown. I read some areas of downtown is pretty rough in the evening. Any area I should avoid stayIng? I was keen for renting an apartment so could you let me know any areas closer to downtown?

There are "excessive" vagrants in an area that is west of Powell/5th St, south of Sutter St, east of Van Ness/South Van Ness. There are some nice hotels in this area just a few blocks west of Powell - but more vagrants than you might like. Portions of the Mission area (bounded by Market/12th St/Division to the north, Valencia to the west, & Cesar Chavez St to the south) can be spotty - but lots of people live in the Mission and it is a very active/vibrant area with many nice restaurants - popular with the techies.

Napa wine tours

Hi Stu, thanks for posting this! You gave me some great recommendations many moons ago for Obidos, Portugal, that I really appreciated. I’m traveling to SF in September. I’m wondering if you have any recommendations for bus trips from SF to Napa, Sonoma, and Russian River. We’d like to take two separate day trips. Any advice greatly appreciated. Glad to see you’re still here!. pp

I've never been to Portugal. My advice is almost always about France, Italy, & the San Francisco Bay Area. Anyhow, since I've lived here for almost 50 years - I don't use a bus to get around the area, so I don't have info on them. Make a new post. Likely someone who does not live hear has a suggestion for you.
