San Francisco: Slanted Door lunch?
 

Hi all,

My husband and I are heading to SF next week and would like to experience a meal at Slanted Door. We were thinking we could have lunch there after our morning Alcatraz tour, but I'm unsure if we'll be dressed nicely enough (we won't look like total slobs but we'll have Alcatraz-exploring-type clothing on-- sneakers, jeans, etc.). Is this ok, or would they laugh us out of there? And should we make reservations for lunch, or is that just necessary for dinner?

Definitely make reservations. You can do that through
www.opentable.com. You can also sit at the bar on a first come, first served basis.

As for dress during the week you'll probably be amongst the working people of San Francisco. It isn't a dressy restaurant so I think you'll be fine.

Lately, I've been seeing more & more jeans in nice restaurants. I had my birthday dinner at the Ritz Carlton - and I'de say 1/3 of the guys (the younger ones) were wearing jeans. The women were dressed much nicer.

Anything goes at Slanted Door.

Last week at Slanted Door I saw people in shorts, jeans, and business suits at lunch time.

My mom and I just ate lunch at the Slanted Door last week.

Dress is very casual. I'd say at least 1/2 of the diners were tourists (we went on a weekday) - jeans, shorts, sneakers etc. There was one table of 4 men in suits, which I assume are folks who work in the city.

Definitely make reservation for lunch. We had res for 1:30pm but our flights arrived late. When I called and asked to move it later to 2pm, I was told nothing was available until 2:15pm, so that's what we took. The place was full the entire time.

Kris, congratulations. A couple years ago when it was quite new, we were in SF for a month and when I arrived I was unable to secure a reservation for the entire month. Last year I booked about three weeks ahead and the best I could do was something like 2:30. But it was great. And yes, you will be dressed just fine.

I remember years ago (50s and 60s) they said that San Francisco had the best dressed people in the US and everyone seemed very dressy day and night. Those days are long gone!

It was quite new at the Ferry Building location. Prior to that, it was in the Missiion District on Valencia. I think it's been around for over 10 years.

A bit of trivia.

True, I should have mentioned I was referring to after it moved to the new Ferry Building and it became one of the hottest reservations in town.
