San Francisco safety O'farrell st at night

Planning to walk from Union Square to Van Ness St at night 7PM and again at 10PM. Do any locals know if this stretch is okay. I think that is about 5-blocks of tenderloin.

Is it better on Geary? Otherwise take taxi, but silly for just a few blocks.....

LoveItaly Nov 16th, 2007 12:43 PM

Personally myst I would take a taxi both ways. Others may have a different opinion of course. "BTW, it is 8 blocks from VanNess to Powell St., which is where Union Sq. is located.

I wouldn't have a problem walking to Van Ness on Geary at 7 pm, at 10 pm I would take a cab.

I would no walk O'Farrell or Geary alone at 10 pm! But you can take line 38 Geary up to Van Ness instead of taxi, double-check, but I think it's a 24hr bus line.

AT 7 pm you may be fine... but I'd spend another $1.50 on a bus.

Hi myst, I assumed you will be in SF this winter when it gets dark early. If so, personally I would take a taxi, or I guess a bus would be my second choice. But I personally would not walk through The Tenderloin in the dark.

As an out-of-towner who stayed in the 500 block of Geary last week, i'd say Geary might be OK early, but O'Farrell seemed much more iffy to us at almosy all hours. We used the bus a lot-never had to wait long, and walked the 3 or so blocks to Union Square on Geary often.

ALMOST, not ALMOSY!!
I don't recomend mosying-brisk and purposeful walking would be better!

Thanks. That is what I thought! Much appreciated.

But elberko, after a few glasses of wine, walking almosy seems like a perfect description, lol. I hope you enjoyed your time in SF!

Helo, im going to stay in an apartment in 449 0`farell street, im reading all this comments and im a little bit scared. We are three women in our early thirties and we want to enjoy the city at night in SF during our stay. Is this a saFe block? or would you recommend us to stay in another spot of the city?

as im not sure of our election i am searching for a new apartment to stay in, i have found another one in Bradway street/ buchanan street. But im not sure if it´s so well comunicated by public transport with the rest of the city. because i havent found any bus stop near by google maps. What would you recommend me?

Thank you!

There are plenty of safe, pleasant neighborhoods in SF like the marina, Pacific Heights, North Beach, Russian Hill, Noe Valley etc. Check out a hotel like the Laurel - lively upscale area, well connected by public transportation. I don't know why tourists typically want to stay in some of the sketchier areas.
