San Francisco - Restaurant for a Birthday
Hello All,
My husband and I are planning a seven day trip to San Francisco. We'll be celebrating his birthday during the trip and I'd like to treat him to a nice dinner for two but I could use some help filtering through all the choices. Some details: He is definitely a meat and potato kind of guy and loves a good steak. I'd prefer a nice, intimate restaurant off the beaten track. We're staying on the far west side of the city near the Golden Gate Park; but the restaurant does not need to be around where we are staying, just within the city please. My budget is $100-$150 including wine (of course!), tax & tip. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks! |
Harris' Steakhouse
2100 Van Ness Ave. http://www.harrisrestaurant.com/index.php They play jazz with dinner in the lounge or you can eat in the main dining room. Reservations a must. They make a mean martini. Food is very good, arguably the best steak in S.F. |
Harris is quite good.
I would also suggest House of Prime Rib, about 2 blocks away from Harris' http://houseofprimerib.net/ House of Prime Rib focuses more on the Prime Rib side of the beef world. Check out the pictures and the Anthony Bourdain video on the place. Looks like he had the King Henry VIII Cut, which is pretty big. Harris and House of Prime Rib are considered the two best steak houses in San Francisco. They both may stretch your budget some, but both are well worth the trip. I have to stop, I'm starting to salivate for Prime Rib. |
I was able to dig out the prices for House of Prime Rib. They should fit in your budget. Note that their 'starter' salad is included, as are a raft of side dishes.

Benehana will send you a gift certificate for $30 towards your husbands meal that he can use on a weekday during his birthday month. Sorry I can't spell Benehana. It is in the Japanese Center which is interesting. I would go back to the center just to shop at the 100 yen store (like dollar store.)

I enjoy a good teppanyaki table as much as the next guy, but Benihana is a chain restaurant. It's a good chain restaurant, but easily not a singularly San Francisco experience.

Thank you all! Both Harris' and the House of Prime Rib look delicious. I'm going to have a really hard time deciding and it probably doesn't help that I'm looking at the menus with an empty stomach. :) Thanks again!
