San Francisco-Palomar, Triton, Serrano?

Any input on which of these properties you would choose for both comfort and convenience. We like funky so unusual decor is fine and we would like to be near fun or interesting cocktail lounge style bars and restaurants. Other suggestions would be welcome like Inn on Union Square..looking for price between $100 and $200.

Are there any other places tha you are looking into? The Palomar is right at the South of Market area which is not so great of area. Same goes for the Triton near Chinatown and Serrano in Union Square. Preferably look for a place outside of Downtown.

LivesinCali - would you suggest perhaps Daly City?

There's nothing wrong with the locations of any of those hotels - and Downtown isn't so god-awful scary either.

SFImporter - I'm so glad you said that, since I booked a room at the Palomar. Thanks for putting my mind to rest.

Please do not let SFImporter mislead you. Believe me, you do not want to be at the Palomar or Serrano for that matter. The Triton would be the lessor of the three evils if I had to choose from this bunch. These hotels are okay during the day, but at night the area becomes dicey.

Dicey? As in deserted with murderers lurking around the corner or dicey as in lots of people, some of whom are prostitutes and thieves? Are we talking about it being worse than NYC at night?

LizQ,

The downtown does get somewhat deserted at night after the office workers go home. Recently crime has also been more of problem.

Hello,
Not familiar with Palomar or Serrano but under the advice of either Owen or Patrick, we stuck our heads into the Triton one day and found it to be very "funky and unusual" as you mentioned.
While the area is UnSq/Chinatown, we wouldn't think twice about staying there. Ditto The Orchard.
As in any big city, always be aware of your surroundings.

BTW, I just booked the Tuscan Inn in the Fish/Wharf area for the weekend of 3-22 on Hotwire.com for $88/night.
Irish Coffees on Sunday morning anyone?
It was the "B" 3* boutique hotel listed in that area.
I think the "B" listed for the Embarcadero area may still be another Kal fave, Harbour Court. Next trip!
Kal
