San Francisco Pacific Heights
 

My husband and I have been lucky enough to get a free place to stay in Pacific Heights for one week. We have never been to San Francisco before. For those days when we want to be lazy - and the two of us have been working really hard lately - do you have suggestions of what to explore in the neighborhood? Thanks so much.

That depends on where in Pacific Heights you will be staying. You could be near the Mission District, Union Street shops, or some place else. Wherever you are you are in for some leisurely and interesting strolls.

If you don't want to climb too many hills, buy a transit pass and a map for the transit system at the visitors center located near Market and Powell.

PS I lived in SF for two years after college. It's a great city for walking. My favorite: Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf--and I sometimes just keep on going.

Make sure to take advantage of free walking tours [donations appreciated]; we have done well over a dozen and love them!

Get a 7 day VISITOR PASSPORT - best $28 spent and best way to get around, next to walking. But walking does get to you after a bit so it's nice to be able to just hop on a bus etc....

You will need a parking permit (annual) to park on the street. Otherwise, expect a ticket or three. Watch out for the day they clean the street. Guaranteed ticket if you don't move your car.

My best friend lived on the last block of Broadway before the Presidio, for about 15 years. The neighbors are fairly friendly, except to the lookie-loo tourists.

Bus transfers have a long time before expiration. You can get
2-3 different rides on them, as long as they're not that far apart.

Sorry, but the one area you wouldn't be near is the Mission District. As others said though, you can stroll/walk/take Muni almost anywhere -- check out Fillmore Street, Divisadero, Union Street, Chestnut Street, Hayes, North Bech, Chinatown, Upper Grant, Marina Green and Chrissy Field, rent bikes and ride across the Golden Gare Bridge to Sausalito (take the ferry back), walk along the Embarcadero, research hidden stairways and find a few.

Depending on where in PacHeights you are staying, the local neighborhood area could be Fillmore Street, Union Street, or California Street--all are conducive to boutique shopping, hanging out in coffee houses, eating out (especially Fillmore) if you want a lazy day.

So true. I meant Marina District--I was thinking Chestnut Street.
