San Francisco - October 5-7: Questions about Fleet Week
I am wondering whether the military is still having fleet week this weekend in SF.

Has it been cancelled due to current world events?

If it has not been cancelled where will it be held?

Also, we have scheduled the tour to Alcatraz on Sunday. Is there a parking area near the pier and will traffic from fleet week cause us any difficulties getting to the pier?

Thanks for the info.

I can't answer your question on Fleet Week being cancelled. If it isn't, I doubt if traffic will keep you from getting to the pier. Most of the sailors came in on ships adn will not have vehicles. As to parking, there is a public multi-level structure right across the street from the pier. When I was there last weekend, there was room at mid-day, and the pier was very busy. So there should be room for your car.

I haven't heard that it has been cancelled. They usually have a few ships open for visiting and a Blue Angels air show. I doubt they will have an aircraft carrier to see this year.
I'm old enough to remember when fleet week or even a visit by the Pacific fleet was a very big deal. The bay would be full of ships. There would be thousands of sailors in uniform everywhere. It was a very impressive sight that you could never forget. Now in changed times, with all the navy bases closed we have no more carriers. You just see an occasional lone cruiser.
If they do have fleet week , you may have a few extra things to see but I doubt it will cause you parking problems much more than usual.

Enjoy your trip.

Julie,

Fleet Week events are held on the northernmost point of San Francisco, near Fisherman's Wharf and the Marina. The parking near Fisherman's Wharf during Fleet Week is pretty bad. City officials generally suggest that people try to take public transport to the area if they can, simply due to the numbers that go and the limited amount of parking space that is available in that area to begin with. There are a few lots in the area, but they're not big and I would bet that they will fill up pretty quickly. If your Alcatraz trip leaves early on Sunday, you may be able to get a spot. Otherwise, you may have to park in another neighborhood and walk. My old apartment was located about 5-7 minutes away by foot from the main Fleet Week viewing area, and there was usually no street parking to be found by 10:00 a.m. You'll definitely be able to drive your car through the area, however, be prepared for traffic and delays. There will be a lot of pedestrians around which will make getting through intersections a problem. How about taking the cable car there? I know for a fact that there is a line which will take you down to the Wharf where many of the ferry tours are located.

Pretty sure that Fleet Week is cancelled. Check SFGate.com but I'm pretty sure.
