North Beach/Telegraph Hill is really nice neighborhood. For a 2-bedroom apartment with a parking space, $2000/month. But, it's worth it.

1. Best coffee & pastry shops in the city, maybe in the US. You won't find a starbucks here! The neighborhood has a variety of restaurants (Chinese, Italian, American, Fusion, Japanese, Thai) & bars here.

2. North Beach has many small boutiques. For examples, Goorin Brothers (http://www.goorin.com/) a hat shop. Al's Attire (http://www.yelp.com/biz/BTX6qIRXyT1JVym6t-v_pw) a custom-made coats and hats.

3. safe neighborhood

4. Walking distance to Washington Square Park, Coit Tower, Lombard St, and Pier 39.

Hello everyone -

Thought I would write back w/ an update. Thanks, again, for all your help!

We went to SF this weekend to check out places. DH moved to CA this weekend and I will join next month. Anyway, we had a great time in SF! We only had time to explore the Nob Hill, Financial District/Embarcadero, Noe Valley, Haight-Asbury areas. But we had a great time. I really really liked Noe Valley. It was so beautiful.

We wanted to explore many more areas but ran out of time...Inner Sunset, Cole Valley, Soma and on and on. DH will be staying with family (in Fremont) until I move there next month. I think we will spend the first 3 mons in Mountain View. This will give us some more time to explore SF on the weekends and decide on a neighborhood to stay.

Our initial impressions of the city were that it was overwhelming, in a good way. We live in Chicago in the city, but SF beats Chicago in the sheer density of everything (people, shops, restaurants, hustle & bustle). I love that it has so much character and personality. Definitely not cookie cutter and I feel like there is so much diversity in everything - people, shops and even neighborhoods!

I stay in San Francisco frequently in the Marina/Cow Hollow area, and if I moved there, that's where I'd live.

Check out the area around Chestnut Street, west of Van Ness, north of Union.

Good luck!

Glad you had a good time Manisha. Good luck finding the perfect neighborhood for you. Don't get stuck in Fremont just because it is less expensive than the City--there is a reason why it is--it's not the CIty!!!

FYI, I like Cole Valley and Noe Valley. I think I would consider those two and probably Cow Hollow if I was moving there. Of the 3, I think Cole Valley seems the most quiet...

I would like to laud Manisha for exemplary OP (original poster) behavior.

First post was concise, detailed and gracious in asking assistance.

Interim posts gave encouragement and direction - very important if you want responses that are focused on your goal.

And most of all, she thanks often and warmly!

Manisha, we love to help people like yourself.

best,
d

Manisha: I moved from Chicago to Berkeley 35 years ago, and my grown kids thank me for it all the time! You will be so happy you did this...wherever in the Bay Area you end up. Good luck!

Another thought: sometimes there will be a fabulous street that is near an area you like. Quite a few years ago, I lived on a street called Buena Vista which is only 1 block long. It still seems like a great little neighborhood, although it is a block parallel to Divisidero and a block below Buena Vista Park. The sun was out most of the time, the view of the City was incredible, walking distance to transportation - many advantages and reasonable $$. Lovely house that did not sustain damage in the 1908 earthquake! Bedrock!
Noe Valley and North Beach are fun areas. Have fun exploring and looking for a charming home!

elnap29 - I live on Buena Vista Terrace! Must be the Buena Vista you are talking about - although people unfamiliar with the streets often confuse Terrace with East and West.

You are right - it is a great neighborhood - and I love living so close to Buena Vista Park - it's like taking a walk in the woods but is only a block away.

I've gotta say - the prices for homes have skyrocketed in this neighborhood in the last ten years. We luckily got in right before the dotcom boom. Now they are selling TIC units for $1.5 - and you wouldn't believe that's without a new kitchen or bath (just a slap of paint on the cabinets) - but people are paying. Of course these are the houses with the great views facing East (unfortunately, we are on the other side of the street and get just a peek over the rooftops).

Hi, SFImporter - So glad to "meet" someone from the neighborhood. Those were great days! We lived on the side facing east, and I also loved my walk down the stepped hill of Duboce to catch the city bus! Can't remember our house # - lived there only 2 years. Enjoy!
