san francisco in the rain

so our much needed and antisapated trip to san francisco looks like it will be pretty cold and rainy. Any suggestions on indoor stuff to do, or which spots we need to get to regardless.

Yes, it is the rainy season now. I have been lucky in not having day after day bad weather on visits at this time of year. It has been more like the UK with showers and drizzle, but that is just personal experience.

Sometimes it is bad in SF and just fine in the East Bay, Suasalito-Tiburon, Napa-Sonoma, or Monterey-Carmel. Or vice versa. Just prepare to change plans in light of the morning weather report.

Unless it is absolutely a deluge - you can still visit a lot of the scenic sites during the rain. Drive along the Marina Green and park there and/or out by Ft. Point - looking at the Golden Gate and across the Bay to Sausalito, etc. Or take a ferry ride for something different.

Hey - just bring a good fold up umbrella and a poncho/parka that sheds water. :)

And there are tons of Museums (De Young in Golden Gate Park, Palace of Legion of Honor out by the Cliff House), indoor things to do in the city. Personally - I liked walking around in the rain - as long as you kept your feet fairly dry.

And as noted - sometimes you can drive over to Marin/up to Napa Valley - or through the tunnel to the Orinda/Walnut Creek area and have more balmy conditions.

The Ferry Building is a good (big indoor) place to walk around and browse the shops. Catch a streetcar outside to ride up to Union Sqare and then get on a cable car to ride around and see more of the city. Put on a rain poncho that tom suggests and enjoy the city.

We have had more than our (un)fair share of rain during our usual winter/spring trips to San Francisco. Here are lots of ideas - best suggestion is to do City Guides free tours.

No major storms anticipated in the next few days. Some showers during the next week, but nothing like a major storm.

A little windy, yes. Nothing major. Nothing that a sweater and a light jacket won't take care of :)

What do you like to do? A bus tour? Museums? Shopping?

Ride the streetcars as well as the cable cars: they are enclosed, which the cable cars pretty much aren't. Get a transit pass and a map, and take a streetcar and bus to the Pacific and back.

take a streetcar and bus to the Pacific and back.

The L Taraval and N Judah (both streetcars) go to the ocean. No need to use a bus unless one wants to walk to Point Lobos and catch the 38 Geary. The N Judah is close enough to the Beach Chalet that one can go there to admire the murals and carvings and grab something to eat.
