San Francisco in Summer months

How is the city and the Napa region in July and August weatherwise? I'm trying to book a trip in June because I've been told it gets too "foggy" and is not as nice during those months. Is this really true? (I'd prefer to take my trip in July.)

Glenn,
I don't think I've been to Frisco in June, but I've been there in both July and in August. The weather in the city is - COOL. The last I went in August, I was wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and a sweatshirt, and was still cold! The skies are usually clear, though, so if there is some morning fog, it burns off rather quickly.

Once you get on the other side of the Bay, the weather is HOT. So you will have two rather extremes in temperature.

Actually, the cooler temps in the city during the summer makes walking around the city a lot more comfortable - especially going up and down those hills! I don't think you would have any problems with going in July over June. Besides, if there is a little fog it is part of Frisco's "magic".

Enjoy!
It hit 90 degrees in SF yesterday.
This is rare. July and August should be anywhere between 60 to 75 degrees.
Fog usually occurs near the ocean. Downtown SF is almost always sunny. However, it will cool down and a little bit windy after 5pm. Napa during July and August is usually in the 70's or 80's.

**** FYI, as a tourist, please don't refer to San Francisco as FRISCO. It is always the City or San Francisco. Hope you enjoy our terrific city.

In The City or San Francisco, it does get foggy in 80% of the town, however, downtown and in The Mission it can be sunny but cool. I prefer the Sonoma wine area in the summer, but any area not along the coast will be hot-hot but without humidity.

I lived in San Fran last year for a bit around that time and was surprised at how cool it was. I came packed with shorts and summer dresses and ended having to buy some clothes to wear! It does get very foggy but it can also clear up altogether that same day. However, if you head north over the Golden Gate bridge into Marin county(half an hour or so from San Fran) it is entirely different. It's warm and it gets warmer as you head into the Napa region. When it all boils to it, I don't think June or July will be different. San Fran is a foggy town at times in part due to it's locale. It's beautiful nonetheless and you won't be disappointed! I promise you.

Generally in the summer months (all 3 of them) the fog rolls in in late afternoon and clears by about 11am. It's really part of the charm of San Francisco and pretty to see. Napa will be much hotter than the city and as one poster mentioned, Sonoma might be a better choice for wineries in the summer. Expect Napa to be jammed with tourists on weekends. Pack linen slacks, cotton sweaters, a linen blazer, khakis etc. for San Francisco and only bring one pair of shorts for the odd really hot day or for touring in Napa. And, yes, "Frisco" is similar to the sound of nails scratching on a chalkboard---it gives us chills! Enjoy.
