San Francisco in October - Hotel needed
I'm thinking of going to San Francisco for 5 days at end of October.
Since I'm going alone, I'd like a hotel near the major attractions, but have no idea where to start. Also, I'd like to know of a tour company that goes to Napa. Thanks! |

My favorite is the Hotel Monaco, a Kimpton boutique hotel

A good rule would be to narrow your hotel search to Union Square(my first choice), Market Street between the Ferry Building and 5th or perhaps Yerba Buena Gardens, which is just barely off Market. These areas have lots of foot traffic into the night which is safer, IMO.
I would avoid the good looking/cheaper cost properties in the Tenderloin as this area is downtrodden; or Fisherman's Wharf and Nob Hill as they are both outlying areas,IMO. |
I always recommend the Embarcadero area--the Vitale, being my favorite recommendation. Lots of restaurants; the Ferry Building; lots of people around, but not just tourists; easy access to transportation anywhere in City and to ferryboats to Sausalito, Tiburon and Angel Island; walking distance to the Wharf (if you have to).

Ditto the Embarcadero, if you can swing the cost. If not, I think Union Square would be fine.

Price range? Try The Mosser, great location near Union Sq on 4th, just south of Market. small rooms but very clean. They have some rooms with private bath and some that use a hall bath.

The Hotel Rex near Union Square is a nice Joie de Vivre property.

There are some really good suggestions above. My fist choice would be the Embarcadero followed by Union Square. But there are other good areas. Most important to know your budget though . . .
