San Francisco in May
 

My wife and I are in San Fran from May 1 o 6. I researcehed the area quite well but I am concerned about taking a day to visit out of the area. I want to go north to the valley to see the wineries and I want to see Carmel and Monterey. Which one is better.

Carmel and Monterey easily !!! the drive in Carmel is beautiful !!! I found Santa Cruz i nice stop off as well...

Both of your day-trip ideas would be very nice. If you are interested in wine, try a trip up to Napa, as the number of wineries there is astounding. Mondavi has a vey good introductory tour, and the area is very beautiful.

A word of warning -- this area is no secret, and can be crowded on week-ends, but if you are interested in wine it is a must-see.

You can do both wineries & unbelievably spectacular scenery in both areas. Monterrey has some excellent wineries north around Santa Cruz..This is the area of the Rhone Rangers..Bonny Doon (making a great number of fabulous & unusual wines) My other choice would to be to drive north of SF to Sonoma County which is more rural, farmy and less Disneyesque for some outstanding wineries..Ferrari Carrano is gorgeous. Napa's wine road is crowded & commercial these days..You could see Muir Woods just no. of the bridge also on this day, if you got a very early start.

I have two SURE FIRE suggestions for you...if it's Napa, the best (and most picturesque) winery in my opinion is Buena Vista. Fine wine, you will not be disappointed. Also, you'll want to do dinner at BETELNUT...it's on Union St. and the food is out of this world!
