San Francisco in July
 

My boyfriend and I are planning to visit SF this July. I was hoping I could find out some info on how the weather is and things to do during this time. I have looked up the info, however last April I was at a convention there, and the average temp was 90 for those few days...far off from what my research told me. Thanks!

I believe it was Sam Clemens who said, "The coldest lasagna I ever ate, was during a summer in San Francisco."

We never know what the weather is going to be like in the summer. Today the first day of summer, we finally reverted to our usual summer weather--fog on the coast, clearing in late morning. Some days all of the City will be gorgeous and clear; on others parts of the City will be cloaked in fog and some parts will be clear; and on yet others all of the City will be cloaked in fog and the south Bay and the east Bay will be hot.

Sometimes the fog is covering the city till noon --sometimes all day ---the wind is a factor in making it seem even colder!!! Then as sun goes down , in comes the fog again.
personally I love it --It is great walking and shopping weather...
Many days it is a high of 68-70 and low of 52-55. Often( maybe 2-3 days a month) during May, June July Aug, it will get up to 80s. However, the month of May this year and last didn't happen....so you can see how unpredictable it is..
When I went to college there "years" ago--our summer past time was walking around Fisherman's Wharf
watching the tourists in their "summer" clothes turn blue from the cold....

I remember that April heat spell. It happens occasionally.

As others have said, the summer weather pattern is usually foggy mornings and evennings with sun in the afternoons. Bring layers - nothing particularly heavy, but definitely an outer layer to keep out the wind.

The fog is fabulous though. If you see the fog coming in, you will be amazed. I was watching the comedian Eddie Izard's bit about SF and he was talking about the fog running down the street. So true.

You must be ready for everything, and dress in easily removable layers. Just came home - baking hot in the son, waiting for the bus in the shade needed a sweater.

It's not only the degrees, it's the wind. And the fog. And the clouds. And how far you are from the water.

Don't expect July to be warmer then April.

Thanks to all of you, I really appreciate it. I have heard of this infamous fog, but have never had the experience of seeing it. I guess I will just have to bring layers. One more question, thinking about the Villa Florence or Monticello to stay at, any thoughts?

Hi bella60, regarding your question about which hotel to stay in I personally would stay at the Villa Florence due to the better location and the fact that the restaurant, Kuleto's, serves breakfast (besides lunch and dinner). Whatever you decide, welcome to SF and have a wonderful visit.

Ok we are almost there with picking a hotel in SF, but have seen a few more we liked which is making our decision harder. Here are the hotels we are thinking about: Stanford Court, the Crowne Plaza, Monticello Inn, The Maxwell, the Villa Florence the Westin St. Francis and the Handlery. Any recommendations on any of these, both positive and negative? Thanks so much!

Thanks to LoveItaly and her wonderful suggestions and an email friend that I have made via this board who has also stayed at the VF, I have chosen the Villa Florence. You can't beat the price or the location! All have said that it is a CLEAN hotel which is at the top of my list with the location an added bonus. We will be heading to SF for my first time in last August.

So so far, one vote for the Villa Florence. My only hesitation with the hotel was price, since it is a bit higher than some of the others. BUt any more advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi bella 60, hotels are like restaurants. We all have different opinions, likes and dislikes. I personally usually stay at the Villa Florence. But because I like it does not mean that you will. One of my favorite restaurants in SF was "hated" by friends that asked me for a recommendation because it turned out that they like quanity over quality.

It is always scary recommending either a hotel or restaurant to someone else, especially when you do not know them.
So I just post what works for me and hope that others will do enough research (websites etc.) to make what hopefully is a good decision for them.
