San Francisco - Hyatt or BW Miyako
Will be in SF over Labor Day weekend. Will have a car as we are traveling on to the coast, Sequoia and Yosemite. In reading other postings it appears Priceline is the best way to secure a hotel room at a good price, but I have not used their service and am a little unsure even after reading the information on Better Bidding and Bidding for Travel. My adult daughter and I travel together. We definitely want a room with 2 beds, which cannot be guaranteed thru Priceline. Two of the hotels I have found with rates around $100 a night are the Hyatt at 5 Embarcadero and the BW Miyako at 1800 Sutter. Several boutique hotels are also listed in this price range, but it appears the rooms generally just have one bed. Can anyone help with information on either of these hotels? Are they in a reasonably safe area? Are they close to public transportation? What about parking?

The Hyatt is a very nice hotel in a good location and has great access to public transportation. The buses, subways and trolleys are all right outside the front door. All kinds of restaurants within walking distance from high end (Boulevard, which is expensive but worth it and One Market) to chain restaurants (several located with the Embarcadero Shopping Mall, which is also not a bad place for shopping and located right next to the Hyatt) to all kinds of fast food restaurants. I stayed at the Hyatt in April and really liked it and have no problem recommending it. The bad thing about the Hyatt? Parking is valet only (but service was very good and efficient) and cost $38 a night.

Both hotels are in nice areas, however the Miyako is a little far from the "tourist" areas. Hyatt is very close to ALL public transit (bus, BART, ferry, etc) but parking is $$$. The Embarcadero Centers used to have free parking on weekend with $10 purchase--I don't know if they still do it. If I had to chose one I would go with the Hyatt. $100 a night at the Hyatt is a very decent rate.

I just got the Hyatt Regency (not Park Hyatt) for $55/night for my dad.
When he got there he was upgraded to teh regency floor, he said the hotel was just perfect and near everything! |
I meant to add that I got it for $55 on priceline :)
