San Francisco Hotels
We will be ending our honeymoon in San Francisco next June. We have no idea what section and what hotel we should stay in. We would like to be in a safe, central, and fun location. We were thinking of staying in Union Square at the Sir Francis Drake or the Prescott Hotel. Can anyone tell me if either of these hotels is nice-and if Union Square would be a good location? Thanks!

The location is good - although San Fransisco is quite small, so you will never be far from the centre.

We stayed at the Sherman House (415 5633600) on Green Street, wich we loved. I prefer small intimate hotels, so we loved this one - and it seems ideal for ahoneymoon (4 poster beds etc.) The views of the bay are spectacular.

If you plan on wandering out of SF - try the Post Ranch Inn on the Big Sur (408 6672200). It is stunning, but might be a little expensive. The Highlands Inn in Carmel is also impressive, and a lot cheaper.

Union Square or Nob Hill are great locations. The choice of hotel depends upon what type you want--large with all services or smaller. We went to the Starlight Room at the top of the Sir Francis Drake this year and it was lovely with a great view. Don't know how the rooms are.

The rooms at the Sir Francis Drake were refurbished about 2 years ago at which point it became one of the best kept secrets in SF. The tourists have discovered it again by now! It's a very good location, just a couple blocks up Powell Street (the cable car street) from Union Square. Sorry, I don't know the Prescott. Look at www.sfgate and go from there. And, the above post is correct, you're never too far from anything if you stay in one of the main tourist areas in SF.

You might consider a Bed & Breakfast. There is a nice one in Noe Valley, Noe's Nest. There are different size room has its own bathroom. Some have a hot tub. You can call them at 415-821-0751.

Also check out the Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill right across the street from the Fairmont. It's spectacularly superior to the Fairmont or the Mark Hopkins. Small, gorgeous, perfect for a honeymoon. They'll treat you like royalty.

When I was researching hotels for our San Francisco trip, I saw Sherman House and Huntington Hotel being recommended quite a few times. We ended up staying at Hotel Boheme in North Beach. It was a great hotel, but I wouldn't recommend it for a honeymoon, unless you're really on a budget. We paid $139 a night.

Just returned from 4 days in San Francisco. We stayed at the Chancellor Hotel on Powell across the street from the Sir Francis Drake. (By the way I wouldn't recommend the Chancellor) I chose this location because the ads boasted "where the cable car stops." My experience was: By the time the cable car gets to this location it is so crammed with people you can't possible get on unless it's too dark to see anything! And, the cable cars are noisy and clang clang incessantly so that's what you hear from your hotel room! And, bell captains use whistles to summon taxis so you also hear that noise all night!

If sleep is not important to you I would recommend a hotel on Union Square! Otherwise a smaller hotel just around the corner but in that general vicinity would be my choice next time!

Congrats!
A honeymoon in San Francisco...nothing can be more romantic than staying at The Petite Auberge or The White Swan Inn (both are of the notable Four Sisters Inn group). These two inns are perfectly located nearby Union Square. Attention to detail, romance (tasteful, not cutesy & whimsical). You will not be disappointed. We are discriminating travelers and spent our honeymoon in 3 of their inns from Santa Ynez, Napa, and Carmel. Each was beyond our high expectations. Their breakfasts & afternoon refreshments are wonderful. True bliss. We make it a point to include a Four Sisters Inn on each Anniversary. Check out their website: www.foursisters.com
Be sure to have a drink at Harry Denton's Starlight Lounge at the top of Sir Francis Drake. Great views and ambience. Best Wishes!

Hi, Pam,
It's good to hear from the others that the Sir Francis Drake is fixed up - it's a great old place.
One good thing about the Prescott, though, is that room service is available (and more easily gotten reservations too, I expect) from the Postrio restaurant in the hotel - one of Wolfgang Puck's places. Beautiful room, good food and good people watching (and occasional stargazing)in the bar and restaurant. Not that either of you should be looking at anything but each other...

Another vote here for the White Swan Inn. They have one suite that would make your stay memorable. You won't be sorry.

Union Square is a great location. My fiance and I stayed at the Hilton San Francisco Hotel and Towers. It's a very large hotel and very nice. I booked the reservation online and it wasn't expensive at all compared with other hotels. Excellent service. I would stay there again.
Stay at the Hotel Monaco in Union Square

Wishing you the best and recommending the Argent Hotel. The ambience is incredible, restaurants are excellent, service is impecable and location is most desirable. You cannot expect more from a hotel of such caliber. I assure you my standards are very high as I work for a four diamond property....

How about Beresfrord Arms Hotel? I heard that they have a jacuzi suite with kitchen. Does anyone know this hotel?
I would not stay at the Prescott. The rooms were on the dirty side - stayed in 2 different rooms the 4 nights we were there - the first had a nest of flying insects and food?-stuff smeared on the wall so we asked for different room. The second room had an A/C unit that squealed all night long. I was disappointed. We decided that we'd stay out of the down-town area on our next visit. We spent $$$ parking at the Prescott each night just to jump in our car and take trips out of the busy downtown area. Spent a few hours total exploring on foot from the hotel.

Best wishes and have a great honeymoon.

In addition to hotels, does anyone know of somewhere cool to go for drinks in San Francisco? Looking for something different – not just another bar. Feedback?

I was fortunate to stay at the W Hotel when in SF this Fall for a convention. I love super-sleek-high-tech and this place is really stunning. Of course the wonderful Kingsize bed with umpteen down pillows and a window seat with a view to die for didn't hurt, either. The lobby bar is a very "in" spot for drinks -- two floors. On Friday nights, it is "on the circuit" for a parade of crazies in leather and drag. Everyone is very friendly and fun, so don't get scared off just because they're different! It IS San Francisco, afterall.

The bar at Farallon just off Powell Street is lovely with Pat Kuleto decor.

I have been to SF a few times on business and stayed at the large hotels (Marriott, Argent etc) they are fine but are your basic big hotels. About 3 years ago, we stayed at a lovely smaller hotel in Knob Hill called Hotel Juliana. We really loved it. It was elegant and well located. I remember it not being crazy expensive either.

Pam-
My husband and I spent the the first couple nights of our honeymoon in SF. We had wanted to stay at the Phoenix--a hotel known for its rock 'n' roll guests. Unfortunately it was full so we stayed instead at the Laurel Inn. Both of these hotels can be found at <www.sftrips.com>
Someone made a comment about being Hotel Boheme in North Beach, which I think is a great hotel in a very fun location. The rooms are charming.
SF is so small that you could really walk anywhere. The Pacific Heights neighborhood (where we stayed) was a lot of fun as is North Beach. I would recommend finding descriptions of neighborhoods (in guidebooks) then picking one to suit your tastes.
