Hello clonard, here is the Kimpton Group of hotels in SF. You might want to check out the website to get you started.

Check out the SF Official visitors website:

I requested a visitors guide and it was mailed to me in one week. It has good information and a detailed map.

I used Priceline to book my hotel. For a weekday, I got the Hilton Financial District for $120; for the labor day long weekend, I got the Hyatt Embarcadero for 4 nights @ $85/night.

Priceline works quite well in San Francisco. I got a great room at the Grand Hyatt for $85. I never would have picked it, but it was wonderful.

I've stayed at the Monaco and the Intercontinental recently (not through Priceline). Both were very nice. The Intercontinental upgraded us for some reason and we had a huge suite with floor to ceiling windows on two sides. We did not want to leave our room it was so gorgeous. (That room was about $225).

I agree with the Kimpton Hotel recommendation. If you sign up for their email notices, you will be notified of specials. They are advertising $109 at the Harbor Court and Triton, $159 at the Monaco, and $189 at the Sir Francis Drake.

There are some dicey hotels around the edges of Union Square, but many very good ones. I've also stayed at the Argent and Palomar, both quite nice and well located.
