We are taking my Mother-in-law to San Francisco in Sept. We were considering the Fairmont Hotel but are concerned that the location may be difficult to navigate for a 70 year old. We would appreciate any comments or recommendations. Thank you, Susan

The Fairmont sit atop Nob Hill and the streets are very steep around it. However, it is a very nice hotel and one would imagine that you will be putting your MIL into cabs and such when you go places. Would you like a hotel with places within walking distance that doesn't involve climbing or descending a hill? The Westin St. Francis comes to mind. It is located right on Union Square and houses the lovely Compass Rose bar where you can have tea in the afternoons.

I took my 87 year old mother last year and stayed at Campton Place on Union Square. It was a wonderful location and an excellent hotel. We could walk everywhere without having to climb the hills. We also took a 4 hour tour with City Tour in a small van that picked us up right at our hotel. I have been to San Francisco many times, but this tour took us to many places I had never seen. It was a great way to rest our weary feet. It is also fun to take the boat to Sausalito and a Wok Wiz tour of Chinatown. We also had lunch in the beautiful Garden Room of the Palace hotel. September is a wonderful time to go.

The Fairmont is a lovely hotel but as stated before, up on a very steep hill. I was in S.F. and stayed there with my daughter and I had a hard time walking down the street without slipping. We live within two hours of SF and stay overnight several times a year. We prefer to stay on Union Square. The shopping is right there as well as great restaurants, and the cable car! Try the St. Francis or the Grand Hyatt.

You forgot to mention the other things that you see and experience in Union Square, like the the urine soaked sidewalks, homeless people in your face for money, and the incessant drug dealing and prostitution both day and night.

You all act like 70 is some old, fallling apart age. I am 75 and go everywhere and do every thing...,.are you all 15? You should hope to be 75 some day and not six feet under.

I'll be 70 this year and you make me sound ancient. Does the MIL have health or physical problems?

70 is not a problem - unless she is an "old" 70 with heart or respiratory problems. My neighbor is 77 and runs 10 miles a day.

If your M-i-L walks, shops, and is at all active the Fairmont would be fine. It is a posh place and you can take cabs everywhere. But she might enjoy the St Francis more. It is almost as POSH as the Fairmont, is very traditional and has great service. Union square has just been completely renovated and is much cleaner than a few months ago.
