San francisco hotel rec

Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated! My husband and I will be going for a quick weekend trip in March and are looking for a great hotel to stay at, possibly near union square? We will have a car but would like to park it when we get into the city. We are in our early 30's and have been to sf a few times but several years ago. I have read a little about Hotel Palomar and The W, but don't know if they are good locations. Thanks for the suggestions

What's your budget, and do you have any particular plans for while you are here?

I can't believe what great prices we are finding, maybe due to the time of year? I would probably say around $250. We will probably stop in Tiburon on the way in, spend Sat. roaming around Union Square, Belden-Alley maybe go down to fisherman's wharf...really up in the air. But probably most importantly eat some great dinners!

Check out the Hotel Vitale. It's near the Ferry Building. It is very young and hip. We stayed there last year and had a gorgeous view of the Bay Bridge from our room.

And it's near Boulevard and Slanted Door, so you'll be steps away from great dining (I like both restaurants, I know others disagree!).

The Hotel Vitale is a great suggestion if it's in your price range. Spend Saturday morning across the street at the Ferry Bldg. Make (in advance) a late lunch reservation at Slanted Door (in the Ferry building), but give yourselves time to roam around the stores and the farmers market). Take a walk along the Embarcadero (you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf if you're so inclined, or in the other direction to AT&T Park; you can also walk to Chinatown, or to Union Square).

The W is also nice. Hip like all the Ws. Practically next door to MOMA and across the street from Moscone convention center, the Metreon. A couple of blocks from San Francisco Center and Union Square.

Hotel Palomar is equally as convenient as the W - just on the other side of the Metreon complex. (W is on 3rd, Palomar is on 4th).

You really can't go wrong with any of these.

frommemphis, I happened to walk by the Palomar on my way home to my car tonight, and the lobby was very lively -- it looked like a nice place for a weekend stay.

The Hotel Rex, near Union Sqare---lovely European boutiquey feel, free wine from 5-6 every day in the lobby/bar that has a very welcoming clubby feel w/dark woods and book shelves, and a staff that cannot be beat. We booked it at the suggestion of our 20 something son who stayed there w/his girlfriend and it was loved by both generations.
