San Francisco Hotel near War Memorial
Want to attend San Francisco Opera in September. Will not have a car. Want safe hotel not far from War Memorial. Inn at the Opera is full, so need another option. Senior lady travelling alone. Thanks for any suggestions.

A hotel on Van Ness (north of the War Memorial building) should be OK.

price point?

If you're worried about the price, try this hotel.
http://www.goldengatewayhotel.com/ The public transportation in SF is very good. Google the sf MUNI for info. |
Agree with Michael: N of War Memorial on Van Ness. Buses that run along Van Ness are safe.
Do not stay in the Civic Center area. |
The Inn at the Opera which is 1/2 a block away; however it does book up doing opera season.
|
Oops, I meant to say that is why it books up.

Inn at the Opera also has a very nice Swedish restaurant.

We're eating at that restaurant next week.
Really, you can stay anywhere - VanNess north of the opera house, downtown, Embarcadero. Easy cab ride from the opera house to any of those areas. |
I wanted to reinforce what others have told you. Public transit from the War Memorial Opera House (on Van Ness Ave.) is excellent. There are buses running on Van Ness Ave. toward the bay; there is the 5 Fulton bus on McAllister (about a half block away) that will take you to Market Street all the way to the Embarcadero, and drop you just blocks from Union Square. You can also walk a couple of blocks down to Market Street to the MUNI metro station to catch the underground streetcar lines that will take you downtown to the Powell St. station or the Embarcadero station. Or you can walk a three blocks up Van Ness to O'Farrell Street, where you can catch the 38 Geary bus that will take you to Union Square. You won't be alone, when the opera lets out there will be others catching public transit. And, yes, as others have said, the taxis are cheap as the downtown area is compact.
So it would be fine if you stayed close to Union Square, or at the Embarcadero, or along Van Ness Ave., or near Fisherman's Wharf (you'd just need to walk a few blocks or transfer to another bus). I have been catching the bus from SF Opera performances for more than 40 years--since I was a teen ager girl, never had a problem. Still, you should always be alert in a big city. |
Thanks to all. Inn at the Opera just had a cancellation for my dates, so I'm all set.

What luck. Good to hear that worked out for you!
|
My in-laws are staying there next week - Hope it's great for both them and you!
