San Francisco Ferries

We will be in San Francisco at the end of next month and staying at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero. From my understanding, the terminal for the ferries is pretty close to the hotel. Any suggestions on where to go and what would be right off the ferry that we could do?

Jack London Square is at the Ferry Landing in Oakland. It's kind of neat to walk around, has a couple of mildly interesting historic sites, and is also the location of the Scott's Seafood mentioned in many posts in other threads. I've eaten thre a couple of times and thought it very good, if not quite as good as others have said.

I second going to Jack London Square. If you are looking for good seafood, look no further than Scott's. Yoshi's is great place for jazz.

Don

The Ferry schedules are due to change in a week and a half.

Oakland is not a bad suggestion. The old last chance saloon, a gold rush relic is in Jack London Square. Yoshi's has fantastic jazz, it's probably the best jazz club on the west coast.

Another option is Angel Island if you like nature stuff. As it stands right now, to go from the SF Ferry bldg you'd have to take the ferry to Tiburon, and then get on a different ferry that goes out to the Island. That's a lot of ferries, however, this may change when the summer schedule comes out in 2 weeks.

One thing is, if you DO go to Tiburon, I highly recommend stopping for a drink at Guaymas if you like tequila. They have an impressive array and a nice deck.

One thing you could do if you like ACTIVE nature stuff is do an all day SF bike rental and take it on the ferry with you to Angel Island. It's covered with fire roads that make good bike trails. and the views of the surrounding area are fantastic.

Agree about Yoshi's. You can also eat sushi and all before the show in their restaurant..I don't know who is there at the end of APril...Abby Lincoln is there sometime in the later half I think..and she is great!!! Angel Island is lovely. There is also a museum there. One can rent bikes and tour around the island as well or simply walk. The vistas are worth it. Sausalito is a good place to walk around in however you will mostly be amid shops..but with some knock out views of SF Bay and the bridges.
Tiburon has a few shops and it is charming. I would recommend lunch on the deck at Sam's. You will also be afforded great views of SF.

I want to take the ferry to Sausolito to have lunch and walk around the town. In looking at ferry schedules, there seems to be 2 different ferry companies that provide service to Sausolito. One at 41st Pier, and the other at the ferry terminal in the Embarcadero area (Pier 61?).

Which one do you recommend?

Budman, Check and see if Golden Gate Ferries runs to Sausalito and if so I'd go with them. I think they will leave out of the Ferry Buidling. This is the one most folks use for work.

I'm surprised to see everyone recommend Jack London Square. I'd go to Sausalito or Tiburon. The Ferry Building, newly reopened after a 4 year remodel, is a block away from the Hyatt Regency. Just across the street. You will arrive in the middle of Sausalito, which is quite small and very walkable.

Thanks PamSF.

I'm with you Grasshopper. Is Alta Vista still open?

Livesincali Mar 22nd, 2003 04:41 PM

Grasshopper,

Why are you so surprised that people are recommending Jack London Square? It's a great place to spend the day with lots of good restaurants to choose from, the Oakland Museum of California, and the farmer's market on Sunday mornings.

http://www.jacklondonsquare.com/
