San Francisco during Super Bowl week
The bad - my building is within SuperBowl City so we had to go through security every day this week to get to work.
The good - the lines tonight (free Alicia Keys concert at Super Bowl City) were unreal, but we got in the "special entrance" because I have a building pass! There's also a sold out Metallica concert tonight at AT&T Park, about 1 mile from SuperBowl City (a beautiful walk along the Embarcadero). The city was looking spectacular tonight - gorgeous sunset, lights on on the Bay Bridge, about 65 degrees at 5 p.m. Anyone care to guess how much a burger, fries and a Pepsi were at the food truck at Super Bowl City? |
One more thing - everyone is in a great mood!
|
$18?
|
$18 just for the burger! $30 for the burger, fries and Pepsi. (At least the concert was free LOL)
|
Hope that was one great burger sf!

Unfortunately, I have read SO many stories about all the angst the event has caused; the homelsss being swept out of sight; the millions spent that various critics have said should have been put to better use, etc., etc., it has kinda taken the luster off the city for me and it has been a city I have loved for a long time.
|
I've basically avoided the whole scene all week but my husband and I took Muni downtown around noon today to check it out, in case I was actually missing something. It was a ZOO! Huge crowds, and the lines were so long to get in to the "Super Bowl City" area that we just turned around and walked back to our neighborhood. I have never seen that area so crowded with out-of-towners. Good thing you had a special pass! Is the city hosting the festivities usually so inundated?
|
April, if we hadn't been able to get in with my employee pass, no way would we have stood in the line - it had to be hours to get through security, and I also just read they were "at capacity" around 6 pm and letting no one else in (we got there around 5). As for the "inundation", it was weird to me - I hardly saw anybody sporting either Denver or Carolina gear - I saw more 49'er and Raiders gear than anything else. Yesterday, just walking up Market St. From Drumm to Fremont was chore!

Yet another argument in favor of having a set SuperBowl city - Las Vegas has been suggested. Plenty of hotels, not home to any team, infrastructure already exists. I know NFL cities like the publicity and revenue, but I believe this is an idea worth re-thinking.
|
gail, I agree, but then the NFL would not be able to hold the "promise" of hosting a SuperBowl out to cities in exchange for millions of dollars of tax money to build massive new stadiums for their billionaire owners. Hosting the SuperBowl, and shelling out further millions of tax dollars to do it, is a reward.

We knew not to go to Embarcadero area, buses are not running full routes, I was taking a different bus and had to do a longer walk to work. We decided to get some groceries in the upper Richmond area (Clement st).
Well... absolutely skipped my mind tomorrow is Chinese New Year. The stores were PACKED!! :) So, Happy New Year to those who celebrate. |
Santa Clara isn't exactly around the corner from Super Bowl City, is it? Was the 101 (highways in Calif. need the article "the") impossible this afternoon?
|
Just highways in Southern California ;)
|
No idea - I didn't go anywhere except on foot today (it was 70 here, and just gorgeous).
|
>> (highways in Calif. need the article "the")<<
nope -- MichelleY is right -- 'The' is definitely a SoCal thing. |
Hey sf, this posted on SFGate and I thought of you after your $30 burger, fries and pepsi yesterday. Gold flaked hot dogs!

We drove into San Francisco from San Mateo yesterday for one of my wife's SF City Guides tours that she leads. We left home at 1:45 and northbound on 101 was deserted - but there was "normal" traffic southbound towards the game - perhaps a little more congested, but it is always congested at the Millbrae exit. Driving through the city north on Franklin was fast - we got to the start of her tour in record time. There were only 5 people on her tour - she normally gets around 20. One person was from Quatar and the other 5 were from San Francisco. I "hung out" on Union St & Fillmore St and it was quite festive. Temps hit 70.
Back to normal today. Sf7307 - did you watch the Warriors game Sat night?? Stu Dudley |
Stu - yes, I did!
curious - my DH read that article to me yesterday. Crazy! (no recession here) |
curious, I also reminded my DH that a slice of pizza at Northstar is $14! One slice...
