San Francisco - Best area for VRBO?
 

Hi,

Have had the hardest time picking a place in San Francisco. Most hotels are really pricey and charge a la carte for everything plus the rooms all seem to be small. Still thinking of a hotel but wanted to also check out VRBO. Unfortunately, it's broken down into the neighborhoods and I'm not exactly sure which is best. Any info would be appreciated!!

About us:
early 40s
night people so will likely be out walking to restaurants etc at night. Would like some place safe with lots of restaurants close by
Transportation accessible (seems like most of SF is accessible though)
Tourist things during the day as this is our first visit to SF

Noe Valley has plenty of restaurants on 24th St. and Church St.

We stayed for 2 weeks in a lovely condo in The Castro/DuboceTriangle. We go to SF annually and don't mind having to use street car or bus to get places and the area is full of great restaurants and has a terrific vibe to it. As a first timer, it may be a bit out for you, but Noe Valley is really an even further stay for first visit.

Thanks Michael and DebitNM. It's so hard to choose a great area and know which ones are safe.

If you find places that you are interested in, see if you can get address or at least cross streets and then post here, easier to answer if an address is safe that try and tell you were isn't safe.

See more about this in the article I just posted. Some "hosts" are indicating that their property is in Golden Gate Park, or in the Pacific Ocean - for a good reason.

You might want to look at the "illegal in San Francisco" thread although I suspect it won't deter many folks right away.

Thanks everyone! Wow, I'd never heard of this type of issue as I've used VRBO frequently across the US. Most of the places that I was viewing were separate apartments in houses with owners on site. I think for now, we are going to go with a hotel as that will also allow for a 100% refundable payment.

For hotels, we've decided to look at the following:
- Hotel Nikko
- Wyndham Canterbury
- Haven't decided on a 3rd yet. I'm both an ihg and an spg member so maybe one of their hotels. Hard to decide as we like a decent size room, more contemporary aesthetic, maybe a roof or restaurant w/ outdoors for a glass of wine and a view at night.

For such a small land space, it's hard to decide in SF! ;-)

I have stayed at the Hotel Nikko on business and enjoyed it. I liked the proximity to Market street for bart and trolleys and I had a very nice room with a nice open view.

Thanks @jpie! I've been looking on oyster.com to see pros / cons as it is always hard to tell from the hotel's professional pics and I'm a very pick hotel person. I like comfy beds, room to move, decent size counters in bathroom, NO old smells, etc. ;-)

NYC has the same rule - no vacation rentals < 30 days.

Thanks BigRuss. Really! There are cities I wouldn't even consider VRBO - New York being one of them - as I would want a hotel in those areas - much more secure and easier to find. So, I haven't checked VRBO for NYC. Maybe one day I'll get to NYC for a visit (that's not work)...
