San Francisco: Any ideas for a great restaurant to throw a 50th Birthday Party
We are planning a 50th Birthday party for a friend in San Francisco. People will come from all over. Does anyone out there have any recommendations for a great restaurant with a private room to have the surprise party?

How about Asia SF? The place with the Chinese waiters in drag. I think it very SF and lots of fun. There is also the Italian restaurant which translates (sort of) Joe's Garage or somesuch. Bucco de Beppo or something. These are places for people with a sense of humor.
I know the Italian place will work with you and no one would guess that the Asia SF would be a place for the party.

San Francisco is the best restaurant town in the country. My first suggestions were just for fun. You didn't say if the person being feted is a foodie. If he/she is then Farallon or Aqua or some other California cuisine temple might be appropriate. Do you have a large open line on your Visa?

sure i do. as a local and as a lover of great food, i have lots... but first, tell me a little more so i can make my recommendations more valuable. how many people are you expecting? what is your per head budget? what are your friend's (the birthday person) favorite foods? what night of the week are we talking about? and what type of atmosphere are you looking for? provide these and any other details you have and i can get a list off to you.

When we were in SF last Spring we had a wonderful meal at LuLu, which is in SOMA area (South of Market). Depending on the size of our party -- if it is big enough -- they did have a smaller area off the side of the main room which might be a great spot for a party. The main room is very noisy but bustling and fun. The food was wonderful. Their website doesn't give much of an idea but if you want: www.restaurantlulu.com

Do check out Cafe de Paris-L'Entrecote on Union Street. We loved this place. There are two dining areas. The Friday night we visited last month, the back room - area - (which is comfortable and beautiful) was not being used, so I would imagine it's available for large parties. The weekend entertainment is magnificent! Cabaret style (they'll play all your requests). The food is amazing and moderately priced. The owner is positively charming and most accomodating. The service was our idea of perfect.
