San Francisco Airport Transfers - Airport to City

Hi, we are travelling from the UK in August and it's our first time in San Francisco. Can anyone recommend a decent taxi firm that would be able to transfer two adults and three young kids (plus luggage) to the Union Square area? Would we need to pre-book or could we take our chances with the cabs at the airport? There seem to be plenty of firms that specialise in Airport transfers but some local knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can just walk right outside the terminal and to the taxi queue. Some of the taxis are mini-vans which will be large enough for your family. There won't be a long wait at all. The fare is in the neighborhood of $40 (plus some extra for extra luggage, a small surcharge if it's nighttime, etc.).

All taxi's available at the airport are decent for a trip to Union Square. No need to pre-book. Dozen's will be queued up at the airport to take you whenever you arrive.

above posts are correct, it's about $40 to downtown/union square and the cabs are queued up where you exit.

SFO Airporter, a full size bus. Will take a little longer as you will stop at several hoptels but worth the decrease in cost and they are used to bags...15.00 US per person and under 3 free...

1JAR, that doesn't make sense for 5 people, who can all ride together in one mini-van taxi.

I also know that the public transit system BART goes from the airport to downtown SF but that seems like only a good option if you don't have a lot of luggage.

BART is also expensive for 5 people - $8.00+ per person now.

With 5 people, I'd definitely just take a taxi. And make sure you get a taxi at the taxi stand. There are always people just outside baggage claim offering rides, but that can be sketchy.

There is a designated area for taxis outside of arrivals at SFO (with signage) and they line up in order of arrival, and just like at Heathrow. Most are cars, but there will be a few minivans.

" . . . just like at Heathrow." Except that they will be a LOT cheaper than a black from LHR into London.

Everyone recommending a taxi is right. In London a pre-booked car service makes sense - not at SFO.
