San Francisco accomadation suggestions
 

We are looking for reasonably priced accomodations that are convenient to public transportation. We would like someplace clean and comfortable to lay our heads but we are not interested in fancy digs. We would be comfortable in B&Bs as well as hotels. We would be staying about 7 nights. Can you help us with some suggestions?

Don't know what you mean by "reasonably priced" but any one of a dozen motels lining Lombard St. in the Marina district would probably suit your needs well. Except on a few occasions (that involved meetings or functions) when we stayed in the "downtown" area, we've stayed in the Marina district since we were married in '85. Now my parents stay in that area too (yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!).

Even though most of the places offer free parking, we generally park and use public transportation almost exclusively. There's a bus that runs down Lombard, another one that runs down Chestnut (a block north, running parallel to Lombard) -- the number 30 -- that takes us to Fisherman's Wharf, down Columbia St. etc., so you have access to many parts of SF including North Beach and China Town, the cable cars and even BART.

I think you need to define what reasonable is, and when you will be staying. For example, mid-week August or weekend October. If it's a holiday weekend, that would be helpful to know. Have you done any research of areas or districts you are interested in? Thanks.

Columbus, not Columbia, lol!

Have heard good things about Columbus Motor Inn just 4 blocks from the wharf. We are booked there on 8/7 after good reports from this forum.

I too would recommend the Columbus Motor Inn, or the Coventry, or Cow Hollow Motor Inn -- all related properties. Rooms are fairly large, simple, but clean and comfortable. All are very convenient to getting nearly anywhere with frequent bus service.
I've stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn several times as well as their more expensive adjoining luxury apartent hotel, Cow Hollow Suites. I love the area as described by Surfergirl.

For nice little boutique hotels, try the Joie de Vivre properties. We stayed at the Hotel Rex, near Union Square, and we loved it. I've heard many other fodorites recommend it, also. It's rates are very good for S.F. and its service is excellent. A charming little hotel.

I was hoping to come in under $150 per night but don't know if that is possible. Location is not critical as long as public transportation is within easy distance. We will be there between 8/1 and 8/9.

Cow Hollow Motor Inn Rooms are $135 (choice of one King or two doubles) for your dates. Columbus Motor Inn rates are $145. Those are the standard rates, I believe there are AAA and other discounts from that, and you might even call to see about a weekly rate.

By the way, the above mentioned motor inns all have free parking. I know you plan to use public transportation, but with a week, if you wanted to rent a car for a couple days to head out of the city or even to do the scenic drive within the city, that free parking is a great deal!

We stayed at the Comfort Inn by the Bay...it's in a great location for public transportation, at the corner of Van Ness and Lombard, and about a 10 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. We paid a bit more for a room with a view of the Golden Gate bridge -- I think the city-facing rooms may be a bit claustrophobic. The staff was very nice, and the included breakfast was great.

I walked by the Hotel Rex yesterday, it looked great. Yes I would also check their rates for your dates. Also agree with the Lombard St. properties (stayed at the Coventry Inn a couple times).

The Handlery usually has some budget options; it's popular with Australian tourists. Also King George Hotel. Location of both are within a block of Union Square and near public transport.
