wow thank you all - this has really helped - and will definately do a lot of the things recommended - the garlic noodles and crab sound good.

As others have said, check the normal temperatures at your destinations.... if you're going to Los Angeles or even the Wine Country north of SF, temperatures will be substantially higher than in the city (and dress somewhat more casual). Unfortunately, you'll almost need 2 wardrobes!!
