SAN FRANCISCO

I will spend 3 days in San Francisco, August 10-13. Any suggestion about restaurants and/or places to go at night to listen to some music and have a drink? Thanks

Do you have a budget ($30 for dinner or $200?)? Type of food/music?

trippinkpj Jun 23rd, 2009 09:19 AM

What area are you staying in?

ecoli70 Jun 23rd, 2009 11:04 PM

Union Square area and won't have a car. Thanks

It is impossible to make restaurant reservations without knowing the $$ you want to spend.

BabaYaga Jun 24th, 2009 07:55 AM

I like the Betelnut a lot, fusion type great food, more asian influenced. The cocktails are also worth trying!
It's not cheap but reasonable. Do a reservation if you want to eat at prime time. For early dinner it should not be a problem to get a table.

Also great but a bit more pricy is Zuni Cafe on Market St.
Great for oysters (if you like them)! http://www.zunicafe.com

There are A LOT of excellent restaurants in San Francisco.

LoveItaly Jun 24th, 2009 10:59 AM

I don't see the point of mentioning any restaurant ecoli until you let us know about how much you want to spend per meal (and if that amount includes tip and tax and drinks or not) and what type of food you are interested in. As sf7307 said there are a lot of excellent restaurants in San Francisco.

Have you checked out the restaurants in Belden Place that suze posted?

ecoli70 Jun 24th, 2009 11:45 AM

I checked the Belden Place website...it's good. Anyway I'm not looking for a fancy restaurant let's say $$

LoveItaly Jun 24th, 2009 12:55 PM

Well again until you state your preferance in what type of food
ecoli it seems a waste of time to make restaurant suggestions.

Here is the website for the food section of the SF Chronicle where you can check out restaurants. Hope that is a help to you. And do have a lovely time in SF!

One of my favorite restaurants, Kokkari, although in some spots it is marked as $$$
www.kokkari.com - you can look at menu and decide

for drinks and music, I like Top of the Mark, - there is a $5 cover charge, fabulous views from windows all around - look on their site for who is playing

Thanks everybody and thanks LoveItaly...by the way, I'm from Italy, where are you from? I just wanted to have general suggestions on where to go. I got it. One more question, a place to go after dinner, to listen to some live music (jazz i.e.)?

suze Jun 24th, 2009 01:59 PM

Why I think Belden Place makes a great suggestion (if I do say so myself), is there are a number of different restaurants, all on that same alley. Also it is close to Union Square.

Yoshi's is the place to go for jazz - either in SF or Oakland

Tadich's Grill for the quintessential SF meal, try their sand dabs or cioppino.

We enjoyed Top of the Mark for a drink and dessert. You can take the cable car there from Union Square. A ride on the cars at night is really magical.

Yoshi's has a terrific Japanese restaurant adjacent to its jazz club (San Francisco). Also called Yoshi's.

You could combine dinner with jazz at Bix on Gold Street.

Hello again ecoli. I was born and lived all of my life in the SF/Bay Area until a few years ago. I now live just a bit north/east of there in the southern end of the Sacramento Valley.

What area of Italy are you from ecoli? I have spent so much time in Italy and have so many Italian friends in Italy. My son-in-law was born and lived in Rome until ten years ago when he came here to Northern California. All his family members are still in Rome or in the mountains east of Rome.

Have you been to San Francisco before or is this your first visit? All my friends in Italy who have been here over the years absolutely love San Francisco.

Our "Little Italy" is called "North Beach" :-)

Hello LoveItaly I'm from Pesaro, on the Adriatic coast, middle of Italy, 20 miles south of Rimini. Have you ever been in this part of the country?
I've been in SF before but always very quickly so didn't have the chance to "really" visit the city...which I want to do during this next vacation in August....and for what I've seen....I loved it. Any suggestion, not only about food, would be appreciated. Have a nice day

LoveItaly Jun 26th, 2009 06:55 AM

Hello ecoli! Yes, I have been very fortunate to have been along your beautiful Adriatic coast several times. I have never been further south then Bari however. And I do know where your Pesaro is! You are familar with Pescara I am sure. We always stayed at the Hotel Carlton in Pescara. It is just across the street from the beach. A very good location for enjoying the seaside, shopping, taking leisurly walks and of course the seafood restaurants on the beach. I have not been along the Adriatic since I lost my husband and I have missed being there. Since I am now on my own I go to the Region of Veneto and then various friends from Veneto and/or Florence and I visit different places. Sadly none of them seem interested in visiting the Adriatic coastline.

Ecoli, besides food, drinks and music what else interests you? I imagine you enjoy walking in San Francisco? Do you want to do any shopping or just look at items in the stores or in the windows? Do you like being on the water?

I have to leave in a bit but I will check this thread later today when I return home. I wish I lived in San Francisco as I would so love to meet you and share some time with you.

ecoli70 Jun 28th, 2009 01:12 AM

Hi LoveItaly looks like you know Italy very well. Of course I'm familiar with Pescara though I don't know the city as well as you...(lol). The South of Italy is very beautiful, Sicily for example is amazing. You got a little bit of everything there, nice sea, cities with an impressive historical background, good food, sun and nice people. If you have the chance spend a few days there during your next vacation over here.
In San Francisco I want to do all I can do in 3 days. I want to visit the city more than go shopping. I will have time to spend money later on my trip.
I'm trying to find out if there's anything I can do besides what travel guides say. I'm not interested in musuems.
I asked about restaurants (casual dining by the way) because when you're in a foreign city and you don't know where to go you often end up in one of those "touristic place" which I don't wanna do...I would have been nice to meet you in San Francisco...hope to hear from you again
