Hi! My husband and I will be travelling, for the first time to San Francisco in Nov. (2nd week), for one week. We've always wanted to go to Napa Valley, but do not want to rent a car. Is there another way to get to Napa Valley besides renting a car? Thanks so much!

There is a Wine Valley Train. You go by bus to the train depot in Napa. The cost is $145 per adult: 415-434-8687

There are no doubt other options if you Google "Napa Valley Tours."

Whoever answers the telephone number I gave you can tell you about other tours, including a $61 tour of Sonoma and Napa.

I was curious to Google this phone number as I never heard of a bus going to Napa from San Francisco! 415-434-8687 is Gray Line! It's a Napa tour once a day!

I know Amtrak can take you from SF to Napa Wine train as a bus-train-bus combo, too bothersome, but may be more buses then once a day?

I don't think it is too much of an exaggeration to say there are probably dozens of tours of Napa Valley from SF--from private limosines to van tours, most less expensive than 2 tickets on the Wine Train, which in my humble opinion, does not offer a very scenic look at the Napa Valley.

There ARE dozens of tour of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys from San Francisco. Some are large groups, like Grey Line, and some are small groups. Extranomical is one that people on Trip Advisor seem to like. Check over there for ideas.

I think you would be very disappointed in the Wine Train. Take a bus to the Napa train depot, get on the train and ride up and back in the valley being served a mediocre meal. You don't get off to see any wineries. It is way overpriced.

Another suggestion: Take the ferry from SF to Vallejo (you can catch it at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero or from Pier 39 - I think). The ferry ride takes about 1 hour. Call ahead to book a tour with Platypus Tours. Don will pick you up at the ferry terminal and give you a wonderful wine-tasting tour with a small group (no more than 12 - 14). You will really enjoy it! He can then drop you off at your hotel. See www.platypustours.com and give him a call.

I would avoid the Napa Valley Wine Train. It only goes from point A to point B does not stop in between.
