Only in for the night. Looking for a great classic seafood restaurant. Opinions?

As a N.E. and pretty particular our dinner at Scoma's was as good as it can get.. Except I noticed out in S.f. they don't have N.E. favorites, fried clams..

Thanks. I also hear Hog Island Oyster Bar is good. Any comments out there?

Sam's or Tacich's are classic SF seafood restaurants;Aqua and Farrallon are upscale, seafood restaurants. My favorite seafood place is Hayes Street Grill.

Hog Island is a good oyster bar in the
Ferry Building--I believe itcloses at 8 p.m. during the week and earlier on weekends, not really a dinner place.

Swan Depot Oyster Bar is good too. Very casual and very fresh. I do like Scoma's too: a real classic. :-)

But the Swan is not open at night -- only for lunch until about 5 or so.

Hog Island and Ferry Plaza Seafood both in the Ferry Building would be good choices too, but very casual.

I think it's hard to beat Farallon for great seafood dining.

Just another thought if you like mussels. Ploufs's in Beldon Place (right off of Bush east of Stockton) is great. For a classic restaurant I too would suggest Tadich's in the 100 block of California (especially if you like Petrale Sole) or Sam's as SAB suggested. Enjoy your time in SF!!

Plouf is good, and the festive atmosphere of Belden Lane would go well with a one-night stay. Maybe you'll hit a warm evening an be able to eat at the outdoor tables. I'd split a pot of mussels as an appetizer and then order whatever the special fish is for the main course. O'Reilly's Holy Grail on Polk Street is the place to go for oysters. Swann Oyster Depot is not open for dinner.
