WEll, there's the Mark Hopkins, the Fairmont, Hyatt. I would suggest the Hyatt at the Embarcadero as a nice choice and close to everything, also some good restaurants in the area.

The best upscale hotel in downtown SF, without debate, is the new Four Seasons.
Great location, a bit more modern feeling than some FS hotels.
Next is the Ritz Carlton.
There are a number of upscale hotels downtown. Akthouhg the hotels themselves are nice, the downtown area is not really the best place to be. Fisherman's Wharf area is a safer and cleaner part of town than Union Square/Downtown.

Mona (aka Sean, etc.) forgot s/he had already posted on here. S/he was so busy cutting and pasting s/he lost track! I think Mona/Sean is just another confused SF transvestite youth that loves and hates him/herself at the same time and is just transferring these feelings to the city where s/he resides. S/he really just deserves our sympathy more than our ire. It's not easy keeping track of all those names!

The Pan Pacific and Nikko both in Union Square are also good upscale choices. I would take the downtown over Fisherman's Wharf.

I liked Fisherman's Wharf area a lot better than Union Square. The Wharf is close to a lot of attractions, not to mention some great restaurants. It is also a lot cleaner and appeared to be safer than Union Square.

Except that Fisherman's Wharf has no true upscale hotels, is filled with touristy stuff you'd expect to find in a Mexico border town, and most of the great restaurants aren't close by.
But other than that, it's great!
