I agree with Janis. The south entrance is way out of you way and will waste your precious time. Stick with the 120/140 plan. Handier when coming from the Bay Area.

>>They can leave through the west entrance, can't they?? No reason to go back to Oakhurst. leave Yosemite. Of course they wouldn't have to return to SF via Oakhurst.

But IMO they also shouldn't arrive via Oakhurst. They simply don't have the time.

My suggestion is an alternative to theirs. It worked for us quite well as you can see in the TR. After our full day in the park, we slept in Mariposa, so not Yosemite lodge, but lots of Yosemite park for a one day trip

Day one - drive to Oakhurst - 3 hours. Visit Nelder Grove and Mariposa grove to see the trees and hike some. Sleep in Oakhurst.

Day two - drive to South Entrance, 20 minutes. Go directly to Sentinel Dome and Hike to top or drive to glacier point. IMO Sentinel Dome is the more rewarding of the 2. Rest of day see falls, and other parts of the park. Can drive back in evening or stay locally and drive back in morning.

basingstroke2, just a reminder - Mariposa grove will be closed. That leaves only Nelder to your suggestion, fwiw.

More reason to visit Nelder if the OP wants to see the tall trees - an advantage of Nelder is that there are not too many people there.

Thanks everyone. This is great info. We have a day already set out for Muir woods but aren't the redwoods very different from the sequoias? And why could nt we go to Merced grove on the way in before going to the valley?
