San Fran to San Diego with toddlers
Dear all
We are leaving this side of the world after five years and are planning a trip to SF for a few days and then to drive down to San Diego stopping off in a few places along the way. Perhaps Carmel, Monterey, places like that. We have two kids who will be two and eight months by then so long car trips are out. We will probably then rent a house in San Diego, maybe La Jolla?, for up to three weeks before heading back to Ireland.
Questions are: where would be good places to stop off with kids this age? Is there anywhere else in SD that would be nice to rent a house, we would like a nice comfy beach house with garden, and don't want to be in condo-land please. Any advice very welcome!
THANK YOU

Great places to stay in San Diego would be Del Mar, La Jolla or Coronado for the beach..
Renting a comfy beach house will run about $2K+ a week and that is probably low season..
Plug in the cities and check this site out for renting vacation homes..
Best to you!

With three weeks and little ones in the car here are my suggestions:
Drive from SF to Moneterey, spend at least two days with visits to the Aquarium and beach. Drive south to either Cambria, Morro Bay or Pismo (excellent accomodations for a family at Sea Gypsy--condo type motel right on Pismo Beach). Drive to Disneyland area for another day to two. Even if you don't go to Disneyland, Downtown Disney may have enough to thrill the two-year old. Then drive to San Diego (Legoland along the way). With that much time, why spend most of it in the car?

Yes, well, it's a long story...
Many thanks for suggestions about where to stop, we absolutely do not want to spend all the time in the car. We are now considering ending up in La Jolla for 3 weeks after doing a bit of a road trip on the way. I think Disneyland will definitely be too much for two year old, but his Dad is very keen! Will check out Sea Gipsy now, thank you

You will find Pismo a very kid-friendly beach. Shallow water, playground near the pier--fun to walk out on the pier and see the surfers, fishermen (and women) and the birds. Lots of affordable restaurants--plus wine tasting near by (yes, they are kid-friendly--don't even start that again!). There is a great farm off Avila Road before you get to Pismo (coming south on 101) where the kids can feed the animals. The advantage of the Sea Gypsy is that you'll have a kitchen so you don't have to eat out all meals. They also have a pool/hot tub.

Hahaha - yes please, can we have that winery debate again - LOL.
On your way to Monterey from SF, there is a small town called Half Moon Bay, which makes a nice stop off. It has a nice downtown, with some restaurants, shops, etc. We live about 45 minutes from there and head over for breakfast and then aimless wandering sometimes on the weekends There is a nice grocery where you can get sandwiches and other picnic stuff. Between HMB and Santa Cruz, there are a bunch of good beachcombing and picnicing beaches. The marsh at the town of Pescadero has good bird watching.
Another place that would probably be a hit with your kids is Point Lobos, just south of Monterey and Carmel. There are hiking paths that you can take, the coastline there is beautiful, and you can often see sea otters right off the rocks - always a hit with little kiddos
