Would the idea of a train to Portland appeal?

The segment from Sacramento to Portland is an overnight ride and your accommodation could be a compartment for your family. Drop the car in Sacramento, not a very long drive from the Napa Valley, and pick up another in Portland if you need one. On to Seattle by car or train again. That's my idea of a good time.

Follow gardyloo's advice, and while you are in Old Town stop in at the Bandon Bakery (across from Radio Shack) for a cup of coffee and a pastry...we try to time our trips to hit Bandon at an appropriate time.

We also like the Indian River Cafe at the north end of Gold Beach (at the yellow flashing light and east for about 1/2 mle).
