Once you get there, you'll have no problem whatsover finding appeaaling places by just wandering about. This assuming you're just not interested in taking advantage of the plethora of tour guides and web site chock full of recommendations!

When we went to SF with our child we ate at Chez Panisse Cafe in Berkeley (they have a kids' menu!), MacArthur Park in the Financial District, Dottie's True Blue Cafe - breakfast in Union Square, Fog City Diner also around the Financial area or Embarcadero, Alioto's on Fisherman's Wharf and Puccini & Pinetti in Union Square. All were good - Fog City is a nostalgic visit (we have always eaten there whenever in SF for the past 15 years or so), Dottie's is a new favorite and MacArthur Park was huge and had great service.

Just like Manhattan, where we live, there are so many neighborhood restaurants it's easy to walk around and scope out what your family may be interested in. Any Chinatown restaurant (I don't remember any recommendations so check guidebooks or websites) or any casual Italian in the North Beach (maybe Little Joe's, Mona Lisa or Stinking Rose - or does anyone know better ones?) will be good.

Next visit I'd like for us to go to the Richmond/Sunset area and eat at Park Chow or Q then go to the Toy Boat Dessert (on Clement St) for, well, you can probably tell what they're known for...

Don't miss a chocolate sundae at Ghirardelli Square---in the chocolate factory. Bepple's pies on Union Street is also good. SF is pretty kid friendly, especially in North Beach and Chinatown. You'll have no problems.

Lori's Diner is a fun place for kids. Decorated in 1950's flare complete with a car and pinball machines. Waitresses dressed in 50's fashion. There are 2 Lori's near Union Square.

Dannie, the Applebees at 2263 South Shore Center in Alameda would be great for the kids. They've come out with a new line of ribs platters that are very tasty.

We've taken our kids to one of the seafood places on the water near the wharf (can't remember which one), and it worked out fine.

In North Beach, we've been to both the Rose Pistola, which has great Ligurian Italian food, and also "Figaro, House of Gnocchi." The name is terrible, but they serve pretty authentic northern-Italian food.

If you like dim sum, we took them to Yank Sing, which they (and we) liked. Also, Jackson St. in Chinatown has a lot of dim sum and pastry shops where you can walk in and buy whatever you like.

Not necessarily a "nice" dinner but for breakfast or lunch my kids love the Rainforest Cafe at Fisherman's Wharf (we don't have one in San Diego). May not appeal to teens...not sure of your kids ages. Mine are 5 and 7 and love seeing the animals move and make their noises, see the rainstorm and hear the thunder, see the "sky" changing colors, they love it all.

A great place for kids is Max's Opera Cafe. It's on Van Ness in the Opera Plaza next to A Clean Well Lighted Place for Books. They have a great kids menu , huge desserts and the wait staff get up and sing show tunes through out your meal. They do a lot of Lion King , Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gershwin etc. it's very fun. The food is great sort of a Californian version of a New York deli. My kids love it. Have Fun.

Sorry I posted too soon. I don't want you to think it's really a deli, it's much nicer than that. They have a huge menu and also nice bar area. Well have fun again.
