San Fran Restaurant Advice
 

Hi..
My husband and I will be celebrating our 6th anniversary in SF next weekend, and we need a little help with some restaurant advice. I've been searching the boards, but have a few questions.
1. We arrive on Friday night at 8:10, staying in Union Square. Any recommendations for a light dinner/drinks late night (it'll probably be 9:30 before we're out and about).
2. We want to check out China Town, we're going to a Giants game Saturday afternoon, so we were thinking lunch in China town before?? Is that a bad idea? I've keep seeing Great Eastern and Hunan Home recommended, do you agree?
We're from Chicago, so prices are similar to what we're used to.

Saturday's game (9/9) is at 1:00 pm so if you plan to be there on time that would have to be an early lunch. It is probably a 35 minute walk from the south part of China town to the ballpark. Lunch might be rushed. I'd opt for a late breakfast and then dinner in Chinatown. Just my two cents.

Hunan Home is very good. Haven't been to Great Eastern.

Ike's suggestions are good but they are definitely on the fine dining end of the spectrum. If that is what you looking for then you can't go wrong with those. I'm a big fan of Boulevard.

A bit more casual but still classy is First Crush. I feel like a marketing exec for this restaurant but we just really like going there. It is two blocks from Union Square. Food is excellent and reasonably priced. Awesome all California wine list.

Hi halperp, I was going to suggest that you have a large breakfast at Kuleto's (which is attached to the Villa Florence Hotel) on Powell (just a half block south of Union Sq.) but they only serve breakfast until 10:30am so that may be to early for you since you won't eat again until dinner. Well maybe you will buy food etc. at the game..if so Kuleto's would be a lovely place with good food for a relaxing breakfast. Weekends breakfast is served 8:00am to 10:30am. Have fun in SF and Happy 6th Anniversary!!

You heard right! Great Eastern is also a very good Chinese restaurant, Hong Kong-style.

R&G Lounge along Kearny is another terrific Chinese restaurant and their crab dish special is a must.

I agree that a 1:00 pm Giants game doesn't give you enough time for a good lunch. I suggest that you have a brunch/late breakfast/lunch at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market. There are lot's of selection with reputable restaurants, like Hayes Street Grill, setting up a stall and serving good food. From there, it will be about 15 minute walk to ball game.

bill_boy's suggested plan would be best, IMO.

Great Eastern is probably the best Chinese food my husband and I have had. We ate there twice in one week while we were there! I would definitley plan to go there!

THANKS for all the responses, I think we'll hit the Farmer's Market as suggested before the game, then Great Eastern Sat night (do I need reservations?). I just checked out First Crush and it looks great...
we're hoping to sleep in on Sat (no kids with us, yay!!), so early breakfast isn't in the plan!

I think only large groups need a reservation - don't bother making one for just you two.
