San Fran in December

Ok Fodor Friends,

I'm visiting San Fran this sunday december 5th for 2 days for my birthday celebration. We are seeing a Liza Minnelli concert sunday night. Can anyone let me know about Xmas decorations in San Fran. I've never been there in December. Are there any locations worth checking out. Maybe a great place to have a drink that does some nice festive decorating. I'm not sure what goes on up there in decemeber that is worth checking out. help!!! thanks

Really, Stu ? There are some really nice displays
in SF right now.

Here you go, clifbob !

Perhaps not a restaurant or bar, however it's worth a stop to check out the lobby at The Fairmont with the largest gingerbread house in SF.
<I>"The two-story gingerbread house measures twenty-two feet high by ten and a half feet deep. It's constructed of fifty-five-hundred pieces of gingerbread, eight-hundred-fifty pounds of icing, four-hundred pounds of candy and eight gallons of chocolate.</I>

Also, worth a stop is the lobby of the Westin St. Francis

While you're at the Westin, do take a stroll around Union Square for the department store windows and Union Square itself.

Ourdoors, down at the Embarcadero Buildings you can view
4 (or is it 5) skyscrapers lit top to bottom with about
20,000 lights - here's a photo taken from the water
looking back at the Ferry Building and the Embarcadero Buildings.

Enjoy, the City is quite lovely this time of year.

The Garden Court at the Palace Hotel has lovely decorations for Christmas. You could have lunch or go to their tea. Most of the grand old hotels have some sort of gingerbread house display.

If you are an animal person you might want to check out what is a uniquely SF holiday display--the adoptable pets in the Macy's windows:

Razzle - the OP asked about Christmas decor at any "great restaurants or bars". So far, nobody (including you) has suggested any - other than the Garden Court for tea (don't think I would catagorize that as a "great restautrant").

There are probably some - but I'm not familiar with them.

IMO, the SF-SPCA display at Macy's was quite nice about 10 years ago - but it has gone "downhill" recently. We still visit it every year, however. Will do that tomorrow.

Stu, sweetie, you are such a Scrooge !
The O.P. <B>DID</B> ask about other venues for Christmas decorations in his first post.
<I>Can anyone let me know about Xmas decorations in San Fran.?</i>
and
"<I>I'm not sure what goes on up there in decemeber that is worth checking out.</I>

Not just about a bar or restaurant. So don't put me or anyone else down for our suggestions. Seems the holidays make
some people such SNOBS !

HO-HO-HO !

Razzle - this is the second time you have called me a snob. VERY rude for anyone on an open forum to call another person a snob.

The OP asked two questions about the Christmas decor. The original post about Xmas decorations in general - and I answered him. On his second post I intrepreted his question to be about restaurants & bars only - and I answered that I did not know of any.

clifbob - sorry about the un-necessary interchanges here - I just don't like somebody I've never met accusing me of being a snob or scrooge multiple times onb this forum.

I live in downtown SF. No snob....just get to enjoy THE CITY each day. Have a great birthday. If you cannot find a good bar here, you are not trying.
