San Fran after 5PM on weekdays

Next week I will be attending a 5 day training seminar in San Francisco's downtown area. I've been reviewing the boards and websites looking for weekday activities for after 5PM. I have found the Modern Art Musueum open late one night but looking for other suggestions. I've been to the area before and have covered most the major tourist sites, Wharft, Alcatraz, etc. but have nevered visited any of the area museums. I'm open to all suggestions, enjoy just about anything, and will be using public transportation from the Marriott SF Downtown Hotel. Thanks for your suggestions.

Alicia:

The only two mueseums that I know to have late hours are SFMoMA and the newly reopened Asian Art. Annoyingly, both have deemed Thursday as Late Night.

There are a lot of other good things going on at night though, plays, concerts, etc.

Two good sources are:

www.craigslist.org has a calendar that you can click on.

www.sfstation.com also has a calendar, a run down of different clubs and dependable restaurant reviews.

Right across from where you are staying the Sony Metreon has a number of movie theaters with nice stadium seating (the movies are about $10) and an IMAX theater if you like that sort of thing.

Check out the museums for Thursday evening. I think first Thursday is free admission but I am not certain. Look at SFgate.com for activities as well. If you like music you will have a wide variety of choices. There are any number of venues. Check out the Plush Room at the York Hotel. This is a good cabaret spot.There is also shopping,shopping,shopping close to your hotel at the SF Center. Take a walk around North Beach. There are some great restaurants and City Lights Bookstore.

Hi Alicia;

If you're at all into the bar scene, or even if you like a bit of a different atmosphere, i'd suggest going down to 16th and Valencia Streets in the Mission district.

There are lots of bars, coffee shops and retaurants on 16th between Mission and Valencia and south on Valencia from 16th to about 20th. The area might seem a little dirty and sketchy, so if that bothers you, might be best not to go. However, it has a lot of pedestrian traffic and is not unsafe.

The best way to get there is to just take BART from Powell station under Market to the 16th Street station (take any Daly City or Colma train). It will cost $1.15 each way (buy a round-trip ticket before you board). You need to use the same ticket to enter and exit. At the 16th Street station, Valencia street will be west, towards the hills (downtown will be north).

Also, taking the F-Market streetcar line both along Market street and down the Embarcadero towards the Wharf is really nice at night with all the lights. Plus, you're almost certain to get a seat. Just board on any island platform on Market Street ($1, get a transfer for free).
