San Diego - wher to stay
 

We are planning a 3-4 day trip to San Diego some time in July. One thing that is really important to us is to have a quiet hotel, both inside and outside. Does anyone have any tips on where to stay, which part of the city, we would like to be near the ocean, not too far from the Gaslamp district.

There are numerous posts in here on this under San Diego - under California. How much do you plan to spend and how many people? hotel/condo?

I would consider Pacific Beach - perhaps on the bay side, which is quieter -including Vacation Village/Paradise Point, or in Pt. Loma/Liberty Station - or over in Coronado.

We just spent 4 days and San Diego and stayed at the "Emerald City" Westin on W. Broadway. Pretty darn quiet.

A few blocks walk to the GasLamp and a few blocks to the harbor.

Gaslamp's not really near the "real" ocean.
Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt right on the harbor and some great views.

Will you have a car?

There is no beach in Downtown where the Gaslamp is. But I'm not sure what you mean by near the ocean. Downtown is on the bay with marinas so essentially you are near the water but not the beach.

The closest beach to Downtown is Coronado. It's only about a 15 min drive to get there. It's a lovely, quiet, quaint place. Especially the Village which is a block from the beach.

The Westin mentioned is actually called the Westin Emerald Plaza. It is a short walk to the Gaslamp Quarter.

At least you didn't refer someone who wanted to stay near The Gasser to areas a few miles away. ;)

budget? Big hotels, small boutiques? pool or no pool? Need more info. Doyou need to stay in San Diego proper or can you go to LaJolla or as far as Carlsbad?

The OP didn't mention "beach" and did want close to the Gaslamp. Neither La Jolla not Carlsbad are close to the Gaslamp, or, in Carlsbad's case, even in San Diego.

i'd have a look at glorietta bay inn on coronado. short taxi ride to the ferry which will take you to the gaslamp. pretty hard to do the gaslamp, quiet and ocean all in one. if you'd be willing to give up the "closeness" to the gas lamp, you might look at la jolla.

Lotsa choices - lotsa prices. You have to determine what you want most and then go from there.
