Thanks so much to all of you for your ideas/suggestions. This will help greatly in planning our weeks itinerary while in San Diego. One thing that still surprises me is that no one mentioned the Temecula Valley and the wine country in that area...is that worth a day or part of day visit? We went to Sonoma/Napa when in San Fran area about 3 years ago. Will I be let down with the wine country of So Cal?

I did a day trip to Temecula - I thought it was very nice - but not as outstanding as Napa - also not as crowded. We had a lovely lunch at one winery - dont remember the name.
My favorite winery was Wilson Creek - they have an almond flavored champagne they mix with a little port and serve in a chocolate shell - I licked the plate it was so yummy
I live in Oregon wine country so guess I think it was nice there - but have seen more spectacular.

There is good wine all over California though, so I wouldn't rule it out just because it isn't "THE wine country" - LOL. As far as whether it will be a let down or not - I guess it depends on what you are interested in. I don't think the area is as scenic or has as many of the other things that Sonoma and Napa have - like the cute inns, the gourmet restaurants, specialty food shops, and so forth. I have had good wine from there though.
