You don't say what sort of vacation you're looking for. If you want some fun in the sun, San Diego is better. I was stunned to find there are very few swimming pools in Santa Fe, I guess because of their constant draught problems. But Santa Fe has some great sightseeing & history. It depends on your interests.

Santa Fe is at about 7000 feet elevation (give or take a thousand). If your daughters want a mountain vacation, then Santa Fe is a good choice. There are not many swimming pools because the water rarely gets warm enough in an outdoor pool. In May, there is still a risk of freezing temperatures at night. Days ought to warm up to 70s, maybe low 80s.

Not knowing the interests of the 20 year olds, it's a little tough to give a good answer. But overall, unless they're really into the outdoors and hiking, I'd have to vote for San Diego. They can rollerblade or ride bikes along the water, play beach volleyball or just hang out and work on the tan. There's a lot of shopping options, including numerous malls and downtown shopping areas such as La Jolla.

Another consideration may be transportation issues. My experience has been that Santa Fe is more of a walking destination. This will allow the two women more opportunity to go exploring on their own. San Diego is more spread out. Therefore, you may want to make sure that your hotel has transportation to major sites, you are near public transportation, or they don't mind you doing a little chaperoning.

If you are interested in sightseeing and shopping, I recommend Sante Fe. If you want the theme parks and night life, San Diego is better. Sante Fe has awesome small shops and fun hikes nearby. The Ten Thousand Waves Japanese Spa is also well worth a visit. In San Diego, try the Wild Animal Park instead of (or at least in addition to) the Zoo. I much preferred that park for animal viewing.

Just returned from San Diego and had a great time. We didn't go to any the zoo or Seaworld since we only had a few days. We will definitely be going back because we had a great time.
I think a couple of 20 year old women would have a blast.
I've never been to Santa Fe, so I can't speak to that.

Your question is the type of question that only your family can answer. There must be some reason why you have selected these two cities. They aren't remotely alike so I don't know what you are looking for. You literally need to write down the things that you want to do and then look to see which city offers them.
