San Diego or Rosarito Beach

Family of 5 needing a warm vacation during spring break (last week in March). Will San Diego be warm or do we need to go further south into Baja? Also, recommendations as to what we should do?

San Diego and Rosarito Beach will be virtually identical weatherwise. March weather is pretty iffy. It may be warm. chilly, rainy. March is still during our 'rainy season', though itcan still be sunny and warm. The question is do you want to stay in Mexico or the USA.

I personally would stay in San Diego. There is not very much to do in Rosarito Beach. San Diego has many attractions that will keep you busy.

Rosarito Beach has gone downhill considerably in the last 10 years. It used to be a quiet beach town with one hotel and a couple of motels. Quaint shops, local bars and restaurants, and great taco stands.
Many hotels have gone up, but not very high quality. I overpaid for one over Christmas week two years ago and the room didn't have any heat! It gets cold at night in December! The local bars are gone, replaced by loud dance clubs catering to the 18-29 San Diego crowd, with $4 beers and $5 margaritas. There are still a few local restaurants, but the whole atmosphere has changed. It is much more like Tijuana, which has really turned me off.
I would stay in San Diego. And during Spring Break, I would stay away from Rosarito and Ensenada, as these will draw the 18-21 drinking crowd.

Linda,
I wouldn't take my family into Mexico at all - especially during Spring Break. Too dangerous and risky anymore to go across the border. San Diego has everything and anything you might want - but weather will probably still be cool - pleasant but cool. Be sure to go to Balboa Park - lots of museums and the San diego Zoo - lovely area. San Diego is one of my favorite cities.
Have fun.
Laura

I just want to add that I strongly agree with John and Laura. I forgot that you were going during spring break. You definitely do NOT want to be anywhere near Rosarito/Ensenada. I didn't want to come down too hard on Mexico and rile up the Mexican flamers. However you really are much better off to stay north of the border. The Mexican side of the border has nothing to offer. It is dirtier and much more dangerous with no worthwhile attractions especially for a family.

On the other hand San Diego is a beautiful city with a lot of nice attractions. It is also a pretty safe city.
