San Diego hotels - Maritime Museum area

I’m looking for a hotel for 3 or 4 nights in downtown San Diego for a family vacation. Does anyone have any opinions on the Maritime Museum area? We looking for someplace within walking distance to some of the city and at least near a trolley stop since we won’t have a car. Our choices seem to be Holiday Inn, Pacific Inn, Best Western, Hampton Inn, and Marriott’s Residence Inn. Any preferences or warnings about any of these hotels? We’d really prefer to stay in the Embassy Suites by Seaport Village, but the budget just won’t allow it.

Thanks so much!
Steve
Steve, which Holiday Inn are you considering?

which best western?

We're considering the Holiday Inn on the Bay and the Best Western Bayside.

Steve, I would go with the Holiday Inn. It's right across the road from San Diego Bay (no swimming) and the Star of India. It's easy walking distance to Anthony's fishette and the Star of the Sea Room. Also close to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, the Fish Market and the location of the Summer Pops at Navy Pier. It's quite a few blocks from the Gaslamp District and, at night, you might want to take a cab. Seaport Village is not very far.

I don't think there is a Trolley stop close to any of the hotels you mention.

The Best Western is the next best, but is several blocks back from the Bay.

I hope you have a great time in San Diego.

holiday inn is a good location. see if they will guarantee a bay view. they mention of anthony's fish grotto...yummy...have had many good meals there. if you are there during a saturday/sunday they usually have one of the navel ships open for tours which is interesting if you are into that sort of thing.
