San Diego Hotel by Airport

My husband and I will be flying into San Diego around midnight are are looking for a hotel to basically crash at and check out of in the morning. We're looking for a clean, basic hotel that has free or cheap parking that is convenient to the airport. The next night we were planning on spluring a bit on a hotel in La Jolla. Any suggestions for the San Diego hotel/motel?

The airport is only about a 5-minute taxi ride from downtown. For your needs, a Priceline bid for a 4-star in the Downtown-Harbor Island area should get you a nice room at a good price.

Oops, sent that too soon.
However since you are renting a car, maybe you'd be better off just going on to your destination if it is only a few miles more.

Look into the Holiday Inn Bayside. About five minutes or less from the airport. We held a three day ship's reunion there in 2004 and were completely satisfied.

The only hotels at the airport are Sheraton and Hilton across the street on Harbor Is.
otherwise you have to drive/shuttle/cab to downtown or Point Loma.
I'd stsy at one of these if crashing is the most importnat thing...(benn there done that!)

grap a cab and go to the Embassy Suites only 5-10 minutes away across street from Seaport Village. Sleep. Next morning take cab back to airport and get a nicer car with all the money you saved by taking cab to hotel. Embassy Suites is very nice. Renting a car is a hassle esp late at night...give yourself a break

There's a Motel 6 right on Pacific Hwy in the same area as most of the rental car lots. It normally wouldn't be my first choice however the room was clean and it had a bed. And considering the gentleman's club just down the street it was pretty quiet.

It really isn't very far to La Jolla from the airport and unless you're flying in from the other side of the world and will be seriously jet-lagged, I suggest you go straight to your hotel.
